Awards and Abbrevations

Bharat Ratna

 Bharat Ratna is India’s highest Civilian Award. It was first awarded in 1954.
 The actual award is designed in the shape of a peepal leaf with Bharat Ratna inscribed in Devanagri script in
the sun Figure.
 The reverse side of the decoration SatyamevaJayate has been written in Hindi with an inscription of state
emblem.
 The emblem, the Sun and the rim are of platinum. The inscriptions are in burnished bronze.

Republic Day Awards


Padma Awards
Padma Awards, which were instituted in 1954, is announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. The
award is given in three categories – Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards fall in
line after the Bharat Ratna.
There are three Padma Awards:
1. Padma Vibhushanis the second highest National Awardgiven for exceptional and distinguished service in
any field including service rendered by government employees.
2. Padma Bhushan is the third highest National Award given for distinguished service in any field.
3. Padma Shri is the fourth highest award for distinguished service in any field.

Gallantry Awards
1.ParamVir Chakra is the highest decoration of valour award. It is the most conspicuous act of bravery or
some act of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air. The
medal is made of bronze.
2.Mahavir Chakra is the second highest gallantry award for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of
the enemy whether on land, at sea or in the air. The medal is made of standard silver.
3.Vir Chakra is awarded for acts of gallantry in the presence of enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air.
The medal is made of standard silver.
4.Ashoka Chakra is awarded for valour, courageous action or sacrifice, away from the battlefield. It is
highest military award during peacetime.
5.Kirti Chakra is awarded for conspicuous gallantry. It is made of standard silver and is circular in shape.
The obverse and the reverse are exactly the same as in Ashoka Chakra.
6.Shaurya Chakra is awarded for an act of gallantry during peacetime.

Sports Awards
1.Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is instituted in 1991-91 with the objective of honouring most outstanding sports-
person to enhance their general status. It is the highest award bestowed to a sports person in India. The
amount of prize money is Rs. 750000.
2.Arjuna Award instituted in 1961 by the Government of India to recognize outstanding achievement in
National Sports. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh, a bronze statue of Arjuna and a scroll of honour.
3.Dronacharya Award instituted in1985 by the Government of India to recognize excellence in sports
coaching. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh, a bronze statue of Dronacharya and a scroll of honour.
4.Dhyanchand Award instituted in 2002 , carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh, a plaque and a scroll of honour.
This honour is given to those sportspersons who have contributed to sportsperson, and sports by their
performance and continue to contribute their promotion for sports even after their retirement from active
sporting career.
Indian Cinema Awards
DadasahebPhalke Award
1.DadasahebPhalke is known as the Father of Indian Cinema. The highest National Film Award is named
after him in 1969.
2.This award is given to a film personality for his/her outstanding contribution to the growth and development
of Indian Cinema. The award comprises of a swarnakamal, a cash prize of Rs. 10,00,000 and a shawl.
3.DhundirajGovind (Dadasaheb) Phalke’s silent feature film, Raja Harishchandra (1913) was first indigenous
feature film of India.
4.ArdeshirIrani in 1931, released first full length talkies film AlamAra. MrsDevika Rani Roerich was the first
person to receive DadasahebPhalke Award in 1969.
5.Vinod Khanna has been awarded DadasahebPhalke Award in 2017.

INTERNATIONAL
Nobel Prize
1. The most prestigious award in the world. It was set up in1990 under the will of Alfred Bernhard Nobel.
2. The Nobel Prizes are presented annually on 10th December (The death anniversary of the founder).
3. It is given in the field of Peace, Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine (from 1901) and

Pulitzer Prize
1. Instituted in1917 and named after US publisher JospehPulitizer.
2. It is conferred annually in the United States for the accomplishments in journalism, literature and music.

Magsaysay Awards
1. Instituted in 1957, Named after Ramon Magsaysay, the former President of Philippines.
2. The award is given annually on 31st August, the birth anniversary of Magsaysay, for outstanding
contributions in Public service, Community Leadership, Journalism, Literature and Creative Arts and
International Understanding.

Man Booker Prize


Instituted in 1968, is the highest library award of the world, set-up by the Booker Company and the British
Publishers Association along the lines of the Pultizer Prize of USA.

Right Livelihood Award


1. The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980.
2. It is also referred as ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’.
3. It is given to persons to honour those “working on practical and exemplary solutions to the most urgent
challenges facing the world today.”

Oscar Awards
Instituted in 1929, these awards are conferred annually by the Acadmey of Motion Pictures, Arts and
Sciences, USA, in recognition of outstanding contribution in the various fields of film making.
1. The Indian films nominated for Oscars are Mother India (1957), salaam Bombay (1988), Lagaan (2001).
2. BhanuAthaiya was the first Indian to win an Oscar Award in 1982 for costume design in Gandhi Movie.
