Recent sustainable materials such as

timber crete, ferrock crete.

Timber Crete:
Timber rete is the mix of concrete, and saw mill waste, as well as san,
binder.
As the name suggests, timber Crete = Timber + (con)Crete.

As breeze blocks would be this is, then made into blocks, panels and
paving that can be used for any type of construction. It is quite similar to
Ferrock It can be screwed and drilled, unlike concrete as well as being
very strong and durable. It is also a material that is more heat-resistant,
and cost-effective than traditional building methods.

Concrete Alternatives:

This is an incredibly viable, concrete alternative.

How to Make timber crete Blocks?

· 3 parts sawdust – Use wood – which is low in tannin, gums, and oils –
for the best results;

· 2 parts sand;

· 1 part cement.

How to Make timber Crete?

For smaller panels, 4 parts sawdust is usually satisfactory.

1. Thoroughly blend the sawdust and the sand together.

2. Add the cement and blend.

3. Make sure the mix is a constant colour.

4. Now add the water and mix again.

5. Add the water slowly and evenly.

Where is timber Crete Used?

Timber Crete has been used with commercial and residential properties
as well as paving for landscaping, and wherever you can think, it has
probably been used! Because it is similar to concrete, it is also very easy
to mold into shapes, which aids building, as well as different textures
and colours, which again adds to its versatility.

Who Invented Timber crete?

Timber crete was invented by one guy that wanted to make a sustainable
home, and with many experiments, invention follows. Thus, timber crete
was born, now a highly-sought-after product.
It also should be added this is an Australian invention and works
especially with their weather.

Advantages of Timber crete:

Below, we’ve explored the key advantages of using timber crete instead
of concrete.

1). Friendly:

There are plenty of reasons why timber crete is an excellent alternative

to concrete, but most notable is how environmentally friendly it is as a
building material.

Unlike concrete, timber crete works as a carbon dioxide trap. When the
timber waste breaks down, it releases carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere, thus negatively impacting the environment. This cycle can
be broken by turning that waste into timber crete as the cellulose is
preserved and never breaks down.

2).Cost-Effective:

Since timber crete is simple to make and involves such a low energy
manufacturing process, it’s much cheaper to produce than many other
building materials.

When tested, timber crete was also shown to have better thermal
efficiency compared to ordinary concrete or bricks. This means that by
using timber crete, you could also be saving yourself money in the long
run by cutting your energy bills.

Timber crete is also 250% lighter than concrete or clay, meaning

shipping costs are significantly reduced or cut entirely if manufactured
in the UK.
3).Durable:

As far as lifespan goes, timber crete will last as long as any other
concrete product. However, timber crete is shown to have much better
versatility than concrete.

Unlike concrete, timber crete can be nailed and screwed into place,
making it much easier to work with. Tests have also shown that a
190mm timber crete block has the highest possible fire-resistance rating
for building materials in Australia.

Timber crete has also been shown not to wear when exposed to extreme
weather conditions and has superior bracing values for earthquake or
cyclonic areas.

Disadvantages of Timber crete:

1).When compared with concrete, there aren’t any definitive

disadvantages of note. Because timber crete is a lesser-known building
material, some contractors prefer to stay away simply because they
haven’t worked with it before.

2) is also the possibility that when it comes to upfront cost, timber crete
could cost more than concrete to produce. However, when this is
weighed up against the amount of money that can be saved through
thermal efficiency

Ferrock:
Ferrock is a reflection of its composition – largely iron-rich ferrous rock.
It’s actually created from waste steel dust which is normally discarded
from industrial processes and silica from ground up glass. The iron
within the steel dust reacts with C02 and rusts to form iron carbonate.
It’s this that is fused into the matrix of Ferrock and, like concrete, after
it’s dried, it cannot be melted back into a liquid form but retains its hard,
rock-like qualities.

What are the advantages?

Compared to Portland cement (made from chalk and clay and

resembling Portland stone in color), which is one of the leading types in
use throughout the world today, Ferrock is actually five times stronger.
It can withstand more compression before breaking and is far more
flexible, meaning it could potentially resist the earth movements caused
by seismic activity or industrial processes. One of the unique properties
of Ferrock is that it becomes even stronger in salt water environments,
making it ideal for marine-based construction projects. And rather than
emitting large amounts of C02 as it dries, Ferrock actually absorbs and
binds it! This results in a carbon-negative process that actually helps to
trap greenhouse gases.

What’s the future of

Ferrock?
While the material composition and implementation techniques have
already been tested at the University of Arizona, Iron Kast is currently in
the process of commercializing the Ferrock patent and implementing it
into pilot projects within marine environments.

It’s carbon-negative qualities are a dramatic turn-around from the carbon

release that has so long been associated with construction and there’s
potential there to undo some of the widespread damage that has been
done in the last couple of hundred years. But there’s skepticism from the
cement industry that while Ferrock could be great for niche projects, it
isn’t practical for large-scale industrial use, like highways for example.
If steel dust suddenly goes from being a “waste” material to a highly-
prized building resource, it’s price will increase exponentially and the
costs of producing Ferrock may limit its application.
