MI2022 Mid-Term 20191

This document contains a mid-term exam for a Probability Theory course. The exam has 4 questions worth 2.5 points each. Question 1 asks for the probability of selecting at least one student from each class if 10 students are randomly selected from a school band. Question 2 asks for the probability that one person receives all defective light bulbs when bulbs are split randomly between two people. Question 3 asks for the probability mass function and expected value if a student randomly guesses on a 4 question multiple choice test. Question 4 asks for the probability of at least a certain number of customers arriving within a time period, given customers arrive according to a Poisson process.

MID-TERM EXAM QUESTIONS – 20191

Course: Probability Theory (MI2022). Time: 60 minutes
(Remember to write down the code number in your answer)

Question 1 (2.5 points) Suppose that a school band contains 20 students

from the freshman class, 25 students from the sophomore class, and 35 students
from the junior class. If 10 students are selected at random from the band,
what is the probability that at least one students from each of the three
classes?
Question 2 (2.5 points) A box contains 24 light bulbs of which four are
defective. If one person selects 10 bulbs from the box in a random manner, and
a second person then takes the remaining 14 bulbs, what is the probability
that all 4 defective bulbs will be obtained by the same person?
Question 3 (2.5 points) A midterm test has 4 multiple choice questions
with four choices with one correct answer each. If you just randomly guess
on each of the 4 questions, what is the probability that you get exactly 2
questions correct? Assume that you answer all and you will get (+5) points
for 1 question correct, (-2) points for 1 question wrong. Let X is number of
points that you get. Find the probability mass function of X and the expected
value of X.
Question 4 (2.5 points) Suppose the number of customers, arriving at
a market is modeled as a Poisson Process with mean arrival rate λ = 4
customers/hour. If exactly 4 customers arrive during 9:30-10:30 what is the
probability that at least 8 customers arrive during 9:30-11:00?

(Remember to write down the code number in your answer)

Question 1 (2.5 points) Suppose that a school band contains 30 students

from the freshman class, 25 students from the sophomore class, and 35 students
from the junior class. If 10 students are selected at random from the band,
what is the probability that at least one students from each of the three
classes?
Question 2 (2.5 points) A box contains 25 light bulbs of which 5 are
defective. If one person selects 10 bulbs from the box in a random manner,
and a second person then takes the remaining 15 bulbs, what is the probability
that all 5 defective bulbs will be obtained by the same person?
Question 3 (2.5 points) A midterm test has 4 multiple choice questions
with four choices with one correct answer each. If you just randomly guess
on each of the 4 questions, what is the probability that you get exactly 3
questions correct? Assume that you answer all and you will get (+6) points
for 1 question correct, (-3) points for 1 question wrong. Let X is number of
points that you get. Find the probability mass function of X and the expected
value of X.
Question 4 (2.5 points) Suppose the number of customers, arriving at
a market is modeled as a Poisson Process with mean arrival rate λ = 6
customers/hour. If exactly 5 customers arrive during 9:30-10:30 what is the
probability that at least 9 customers arrive during 9:30-11:00?
