MEDIA RELEASE

RESULTS OF THE MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTIONS HELD ON


01 JUNE 2022
During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal,
Mpumalanga and Northern Cape the African National Congress (ANC) retained three
seats; whereas the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters
(EFF) won one seat each.

The new councillors for the ANC are as follows:


 Ntshavheni Thovhedzo Mutavhatsindi, in Ward 53, in City of Johannesburg
Municipality – JHB: The party retained the seat won in the 2021 Municipal
Elections, by 31.67% of the total votes cast compared to 59.01% during the 2021
Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 30.18%.

 Sphiwe Sihle Ndlovu, in Ward 13, in UMvoti Municipality – KZN245: The


party retained the seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 33.84% of the
total votes cast compared to 43.23% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter
turnout yesterday was 59.21%.

 Nteteleng Joseph Mashabela, in Ward 10, in Dr JS Moroka Municipality –


MP316: The party retained the seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with
68.26% of the total votes cast compared to 65.96% during the 2021 Municipal
Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 34.95%.

The new councillor for the DA is:


 Johan Hendrik Vermeulen, in Ward 04, in Kareenerg Municipality –
NC074: The party won the seat previously held by the African National
Congress (ANC) with 42.77% of the total votes cast compared to 32.53%
received by the ANC during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout
yesterday was 72.83%.

The new councillor for the EFF is:


 Lindokuhle Emmanuel Biyela, in Ward 29, in Rand West City Municipality
– GT485: The party won the seat previously held by the African National
Congress (ANC) with 54.81% of the total votes cast compared to 47.95%
received by the ANC during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout
yesterday was 34.33%.
