Important Keywords :
Biosphere
The biosphere is the narrow zone of contact between land, water and air which contains
all forms of life.
Lithosphere
The solid portion of the earth is called the lithosphere.
Hydrosphere
The hydrosphere is the combined mass of water found on, under and above the surface
of the earth.
Atmosphere
The gaseous envelope that surrounds the earth is called the atmosphere.
Continents
The large landmasses rising above sea level are known as the continents.
Ocean basins
The huge water bodies are called the ocean basins.
Global warming
Global warming is the long-term rise in the average temperature of the earth’s climate
system.

1. (a) The four major domains of the earth are – lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and
biosphere.
(b) Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica are the
major continents of the earth.
(c) Australia and Antarctica are the two continents that lie entirely in the Southern
hemisphere.
(d) Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere and Exosphere are the
different layers of atmosphere.
(e) The earth is the only planet, whose surface is covered with more than 71 percent of
water. This makes the earth look blue from the space. Therefore, it is called the ‘blue
planet’.
(f) The Northern Hemisphere is called the land hemisphere because the greater part of
earth’s land mass lies in the Northern Hemisphere.
(g) The Biosphere is important for living organisms because it is the only zone where all
the living things such as human, plants and animals can survive and exist.
