COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals essentially with conduction heat transfer processes. The position of heat
transfer by conduction in relation to other modes would be elucidated. It would expose to
students the underlying principles involved in heat transmission though solid components in
sections of engineering designs where heat is generated, transferred or accumulated. The
governing equations in cartesian, spherical and cylindrical coordinate systems would be
discussed. Students would be able to select appropriate materials in design activities as
engineers. Practical sessions to determine thermal conductivities, maximum insulation in heat
transfer media, etc, etc would be carried out
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this course are:
introduce fundamental principles of heat transfer by diffusion either at steady or transient
conditions, and
enable students carry out safe engineering designs using appropriate materials where heat
transfer by conduction is involved
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Attendance: It is expected that every student will be in class for lectures and also participate in
all practical exercises. Attendance records will be kept and used to determine each person’s
qualification to sit for the final examination. A student shall be in class for about 67% of the time
the class opens. In case of illness or other unavoidable cause of absence, the student must
communicate as soon as possible with any of the instructors, indicating the reason for the
absence.
