COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed primarily for students of Mechanical Engineering. It provides a
comprehensive knowledge and insight into the study of Fluid Mechanics. Topics to be covered
include: Fluid statics – pressure variation with altitude; Newton’s law of pressure at a point; plane
of pressure/stress; application of Newton’s law. Types of fluid: – Newton’s law, viscosity,
Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids. Forces on submerged surfaces. Equations of fluid motion.
Flow measurements. Forces exerted by flowing fluids. Laminar and Turbulent flows. Reynolds
Number. Flow in pipes and channels. One, two and three dimensional steady flows of
incompressible fluid; critical flow, small amplitude waves; and shock waves. Fluid Machinery:
Similarity and dimensionless analysis.
1
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this course are to:
Introduce students to basic mechanics of fluid flow.
Provide students with opportunities to develop their knowledge of fluid flow in pipes.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Attendance: It is expected that every student will be in class for lectures and also participate in
all practical exercises. Attendance records will be kept and used to determine each person’s
qualification to sit for the final examination. In case of illness or other unavoidable cause of
absence, the student must communicate as soon as possible with any of the instructors, indicating
the reason for the absence.
2
Code of Conduct in Lecture Rooms and Workshop: Students should turn off their cell phones
during lectures. Students are prohibited from engaging in other activities (such as texting,
chatting on phone, watching videos, etc.) during lectures. Food and drinks are not permitted in
the workshop.
