Important

1) Read all problems first, then start with the

one you think is clearer and requires less time to
solve.

2) Solve the following questions.

1
ME 340 (MECHANICAL DESIGN) FIRST MID TERM EXAM

Question 1# (10 Marks)

The cold-drawn AISI 1040

steel bar shown below is
subjected to a fluctuating axial
load P that fluctuates from 12
kN to 28 kN. The bar is
notched with notch radius of 2
mm. Determine the minimum
thickness t to prevent failure if σy = 490 MPa, σe = 208 MPa, σu = 590 MPa.
the fatigue factor of safety is S
=2

Question 2# (10 Marks)

The cast iron cylinder shown in

Figure carries an axial compressive
load of 75 000 lb and torque T =
20000. Compute the design factor if
it is made from gray cast iron.
Grade 40, having a yield strength of
70 ksi and a compressive ultimate
strength of 140 ksi.

Question 3# (15 Marks)

Cantilever bar system shown below is loaded at D with a 400 N force in

the x direction and a 200 N force in the y direction. It is assumed that bar
BD is strong enough and will not fail due to the applied load. Bar AB is
more likely to fail.

a) Draw the stress distribution yielded from each force.

b) Based on the maximum shear stress theory (Tresca), calculate the

equivalent stress on the four corners points.

Question 4 # (15 Marks)

This problem illustrates that the factor of safety for a machine element
depends on the particular point selected for analysis. Here you are to
compute factors of safety, based upon the distortion energy theory, for
stress elements at weakest point (A or B) of the member shown in the
figure. This bar is made of AISI 1006 cold-drawn steel and is loaded by
the forces F = 500: 600 N, P = 2000: 6000 N, and T = 20: 30 N.m. (σy =
280 MPa, σe = 180 MPa, σu = 330 MPa)

a. Analytically, b. Graphically
