Practice Numericals For Module 4
1. A plane wave in air with an electric field amplitude of 30V/m is incident normally upon the
surface of a lossless, non magnetic medium with r = 16. Find reflection and transmission
coefficient and SWR in air medium.
2. A plane wave traveling in medium 1 with r1 = 2.25 is normally incident upon medium 2 with
r2 = 4. Both the media are made of nonmagnetic, non-conducting materials. If the electric
field of the incident wave is given by Ei = ŷ 8cos(6 109t – 30 x) (V/m); obtain time-
domain expressions for the electric and magnetic fields in each of the two media.
3. A plane wave traveling in medium-1 with r1 = 2.56 is normally incident upon medium 2
with r2 = 4.41. Both the media are made of nonmagnetic dielectric materials. The electric
field of the incident wave is given by Ēi= ŷ 10 Cos (5 109t – 20 x) (V/m). Obtain the
expressions for
(i) Reflected electric field
(ii) Transmitted electric field
(iii) Incident power
4. An EM wave travelling in air gets transmitted to a dielectric medium. The waves are given by
Ei = Eio Cos (5 t – 15 x) and Et = Eto Cos (5 t + 20 x). Find the refractive index of the
dielectric medium.
5. Consider a lossless and non magnetic medium with dielectric constant equal to r=9. A plane
wave in air is incident normally upon the surface of the medium. The incident wave is given
by the expression E = 40 Cos (5π x109t - 20πx)V/m, where symbols have their usual
meaning. (i) Find reflection and transmission coefficients. (ii) Obtain expressions for the
reflected and transmitted waves.(iii) Find aaverage power density of the incident wave.
6. Write the Fresnel’s equations for R|| and R⊥ i.e. when Electric field vector is parallel and
perpendicular to the plane of incidence. Draw well-labeled diagram depicting this.
7. Show that the coefficient of reflected intensity is 0.4 for air to glass (RI=1.5) interface.
8. If the relative permittivity of silica glass is 2.56, find the velocity of an EM wave travelling
through it.
9. Consider a ray of unpolarised light in air getting completely polarized at an angle of 50 o. Find
the refractive index of the polarizing medium.
