Careers in STEM - Updated

This document provides an overview of careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. It begins with a quote by Marie Curie about being curious about ideas rather than people. It then lists examples of STEM careers and explains why each STEM field is studied. Specifically, it discusses how science addresses questions about the natural world, how technology supports innovative design, and how engineering provides evidence about historic events like the Titanic sinking. It notes that mathematics builds mental discipline and supports other subjects. In closing, it states that STEM degrees can lead to diverse careers beyond just obvious STEM roles.

Careers in STEM

Francis Kirby Burnea, PhD

Inspirational Quote

"Be less curious about

people and more curious
about ideas"
-Marie Curie

Radioactive is a 2019 British biographical

drama film written by Jack Thorne, directed
by Marjane Satrapi and starring Rosamund
Pike as Marie Curie. The film is based on
the 2010 graphic novel Radioactive: Marie &
Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by
Lauren Redniss.

STEM stands for science,

technology, engineering and
mathematics and refers to any
subjects that fall under these
four disciplines.

1. Aerospace engineering 3. Chemical engineering 5. Computer science

2. Psychology 4. Statistics 6. Biochemistry

Why Study
Science?
Science addresses questions about the
natural world and the more we
understand the natural and material
world, the more we recognize the
impact of humans on the Earth system
as a whole.
Why Study
Technology?
With its focus on design thinking, technology
education supports students to be
innovative, reflective and critical in
designing new models, products, software,
systems and tools to benefit people while
taking account of their impact on cultural,
ethical, environmental and economic
conditions
Why Study The Titanic struck an iceberg in the ocean and sank
within hours. Equipped with only 20 lifeboats, the
Titanic went down with the loss of 1523 passengers

Engineering?
and crew. Recent engineering evidence suggests that
the ship experienced a hull failure at the surface
and broke into pieces before it went down.
Why Study
Mathematics provides an effective way of building mental
discipline and encourages logical reasoning and mental
rigor. In addition, mathematical knowledge plays a crucial

Math?
role in understanding the contents of other school
subjects such as science, social studies, and even music
and art.
Not every STEM-related graduate job is
this obvious though. For example, a
STEM degree could lead to a career
working on special effects in movies,
helping to design new sportswear, or
revolutionizing the farming industry.
This is in addition to roles in areas
such as finance and accountancy,
construction, telecoms, and the energy
sector.

What We Do
10 Things for
High School
Students to
Remember

https://www.livecareer.com/
1. Take time to think about
what you like to do, and
dream and imagine ideal
careers.

2. Challenge yourself in
high school, but don't
overwhelm yourself.
3. Work, volunteer, or
otherwise gain some
experience.
4. Get as much
education as you can.

5. Talk with as many adults

as possible about careers
and colleges.
6. Remember that everyone must
follow his or her own path in
life.
7. People change; don't feel
locked into any college or career
now.
8. Don't let anyone control your
dreams and ambitions.
9. It's never too early nor
too late to get organized
and begin making plans.

10. Never stop learning:

read, grow, and expand
your mind.
