ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to know the idea of considering caregivers as a source of support

in the context of emotional health to the caregiving students of Masbate National Comprehensive

High School

Caregivers are known to be significant in someone`s existence when they are no longer

capable of doing things by their selves. Caregivers never had a part in a student`s life who`s

suffering from emotional problems. That`s why researchers are looking the chance of the them

being part of the student`s emotional life.

The proponents were the caregiving students who suffering from anxiety and depression. In

this research you`ll expect to see the chances of the caregivers to provide emotional support to the

students and in what way they can help them.

The proponents answer were gathered through questionnaire containing open ended

question that will given for the respondents.

The findings shows that most caregiving student has suffering from the problem of

emotional health.

It can be inferred that the caregivers can take care the person who suffering from emotional

health problem not just in adult or the baby.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The point of this research is to identify if there is a possibility for the students to consider

the caregivers as a source of emotional support. We all know that caregivers are known in

providing direct physical care to the children’s, elderly people or chronically ill persons. They

never had a role in a teenager`s life unless they have disability. However, we all know that there

many students who suffers from anxiety and depression. The researchers would like to know if

how significant it is for the caregiving students to maintain their emotional health. Researchers

would also like to know if there is a chance that they seek help from the caregivers to face the

emotional struggles they`ve been going through and in what possible way a caregiver can help

them.

Depression and anxiety disorders are different, but people with depression often experience

symptoms similar to those of an anxiety disorder, such as nervousness, irritability, and problems

sleeping and concentrating. But each disorder has its own causes and its own emotional and

behavioral symptoms. In fact 1 out of 5 students have a diagnosable emotional disorder and 1 out

of 10 young people have mental health challenge that is severe enough to impair how they function

at home, school and in the community. And it believed to continuously increase due to the

pandemic.

Considering the situation that there are some students who have no one to talk to and

continuously suffering from emotional problems but doesn’t want yet to seek help from a

psychiatrist. That what makes the researchers more curious about the possibility of considering the

Statement of the Problem

The main objective of this study is to notify the Grade 12 Caregiving Students of Masbate

National Comprehensive High School that there is a possible way for them to be supported in

terms of emotional aspects specifically in the context of anxiety and depression.

The researchers will be guided by the following questions:

1. Does the student currently facing emotional problems?

1.1. What emotional problem it might be?

1.2. Does the student receive or seek any emotional support to address his/her problem?

1.3. Where do they receive it? Where do they seek it?

2. How significant it is for a caregiving student to maintain a good emotional health?

3. Is there a chance for a caregiving student to consider the caregivers to be a source of his/her

emotional support?

4. In what way can a caregiver help them to cope up with their emotional problems?

Definition of Terms

Anxiety disorder- are mental health conditions that involve excessive amounts of anxiety, fear,

nervousness, worry, or dread. Anxiety that is too constant or too intense can cause a person to feel

preoccupied, distracted, tense, and always on alert. Anxiety disorders are among the most common

mental health conditions.

Behavioral symptom- are persistent or repetitive behaviors that are unusual, disruptive,

inappropriate, or cause problems. Aggression, criminal behavior, defiance, drug use, hostility,

inappropriate sexual behavior, inattention, secrecy, and self-harm are examples of behavioral

symptoms.

Caregivers- gives care to someone who needs help taking care of themselves. The person who

needs help may be a child, an adult, or an older adult. They may need help because of an injury or

disability. Or they may have a chronic illness such as Alzheimer's disease or cancer. Some

caregivers are informal caregivers.

Chronic illness- is a long-term health condition that may not have a cure. Examples of chronic

illnesses are: Alzheimer disease and dementia. Arthritis. Asthma.

Depression- is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also

called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave

and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal

day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living.

Emotional Health- is one aspect of mental health. It is your ability to cope with both positive and

negative emotions, which includes your awareness of them. Emotionally healthy people have good

coping mechanisms for negative emotions, and they also know when to reach out to a professional

for help.

Psychiatrist- is a medical doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health, including

substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects

of psychological problems.

Significance of the Study

This study will merit the following:

Students - this study will be beneficial to the students who want to cope up from anxiety and

depression. It will serve as a guide in preparing themselves for the possible outcomes of their

emotional health and it will help to upgrade motivation not only to solve problems but also to

stimulate one’s individual to discover the underlying beauty of caregivers support.

Caregivers - the result of this study can identify if there is a possibility in widening their role and

can possibly open many opportunities for them and also they will be able to help many students

who suffer from emotional health.

Teachers – this will benefit the teachers because the result of this study can help them to deal with

the students who are experiencing anxiety and depression.

Parents – the result of this study is to help them identify if their children are suffering from

anxiety and depression. This can also be a choice for them if they were not able to provide the

support that the children needed to have a good emotional health.

Future Researchers - this body of knowledge will be helpful to the future researchers as it will

provide new directions for further studies that can be explored related to this topic. The result of

this research can be their reference in the future in case they want to widen the scope of this

research or if they are going to conduct a research with the same idea.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to provide opportunities for the students to help them

cope up with emotional problems in the context of anxiety and depression. This study will consider

student`s name (optional), age, gender and strand.

This study will only have 20 respondents from Grade 12 Caregiving Students disregarding

their gender and age. The respondent must be a student of Masbate National Comprehensive

Highschool in the school year 2020-2021. Each respondent will answer one questionnaire that will

be given to them through online or personally following the health protocols. The researchers

choose caregiving student for they can also be a caregiver in the future.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

According to Thomas et al. (2015) to detect and describe caregivers' current need of

support, the concept of “unmet needs” was endorsed from patient-oriented psychological research.

Following this concept, unmet needs are defined as the “requirement for some desirable, necessary,

or useful action to be taken or some resource to be provided, to attain optimal well-being.” There is

growing interest in assessing caregivers' needs by specific caregiver-tailored instruments targeting

different domains of frequently unmet needs (e.g, emotional and psychological, comprehensive

cancer care, and information. Female caregivers, non-spouses, and caregivers reporting distress,

anxiety, and/or depression are considered to be at a higher risk of unmet support needs. However,

to the best of our knowledge there is no comprehensive study including a broad range of possible

medical, social, and psychological predictors to identify the group of caregivers at highest risk.

In fact, Soothill et al. (2015) demonstrated that cancer caregivers can have considerably

more unmet needs than the patients they care for. Furthermore, it appears that there is a significant

percentage of cancer caregivers experiencing a multitude of unmet needs. Female caregivers, non-

spouses, and caregivers reporting distress, anxiety, and/or depression are considered to be at a

higher risk of unmet support needs. However, to the best of our knowledge there is no

comprehensive study including a broad range of possible medical, social, and psychological

predictors to identify the group of caregivers at highest risk.

Ai Wei (2020) concluded that mental health such as stress, anxiety and depression have

been on the rise in recent time among different groups of people in the emerging challenging

society and especially among university students. University is a place where most adolescents

would experience a change phase in life, discovering their identity as well as experiencing several

challenges. All these pressures might cause students to suffer from anxiety or stress or in some

cases severe depression, which could lead them to isolate themselves from other people, or to have

poor academic performance or very low self-esteem as well as dropping out from the universities.

This is quite a dangerous trend because if such students are not treated early, the chances for their

situation to worsen or ultimately attempting suicide would be high. Several technologies have been

utilized to help assist clinicians and patients to confront and help mitigate health problems.

Technologies such as eHealth, or mHealth which utilizes smartphones and remote patient

monitoring systems (RPMS) have been widely used in the healthcare and are proven to be efficient

and quite reliable to help those who suffer from health issues. In this project, a remote mental

health monitoring system (RMHMS) has been proposed to enable lecturers as well as university

administration and therapists/counsellors to track students’ level of stress, anxiety and depression

and swiftly engage those who suffer from stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Students who

suffer from severe stress, anxiety symptoms and depression, will be given more attention by the

university’s administrations based on the information available from the remote mental health

monitoring system. The proposed system will help facilitate early interventions and treatment such

as referrer to counselling sessions or seeking psychiatric help. The system equally incorporates

alert systems to students’ friends or families and their caregivers to intimate them of their situation

too so that they may help the students to overcome their mental health issues before getting

worsened.

Ibrahim et al. (2016) reported that psychological distress is defined as the discomfort of a

patient while experiencing symptoms of disorders or anxiety before and after treatment. It refers to

the context of strain, stress, and distress. Past research often described it as an emotional suffering

condition with symptoms of depression and anxiety. These symptoms can range from a person

showing disinterest, feeling sad, or losing hope to depression, anxiety, nervousness followed by

some somatic symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and insomnia.8 Psychological distress is not

merely associated with the inability to conduct daily chores, but it is also a measure of the other

psychiatric disorder symptoms, such as major depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

Caregivers also tend to experience social problems because of the people around them. Perceived

stigma and symptoms of depression among caregivers were significantly associated. Society often

relates serious mentally ill patients with violence and ~70% of the respondents included in their

study believed that such patients were dangerous. This leads to a stereotype and discrimination

against caregivers making it even more difficult for them to seek help and support from others. It

could also result in symptoms of serious distress such as depression, sadness, anxiety, physical

disorder, and demoralization to the stigmatized person.

Caregivers, in particular spouses, had more severe depression and a higher proportion

reporting tiredness, sadness and less satisfaction with life compared with healthy elderly subjects.

Using linear regression analysis, patient predictors of caregiver distress were depression, functional

and cognitive impairment, agitation, aberrant motor behavior and delusions. Caring for a spouse

with Parkinson's disease is associated with emotional and social distress, underlining the

importance of also assessing the needs of careers. Mental symptoms of parkinsonian patients were

the most consistent and powerful predictors of caregiver distress, suggesting that identification and

treatment of mental symptoms may reduce distress in caregivers of subjects with Parkinson's

disease according to Karlsen et al. (1999)

The appearance of a disease is an event that impacts the life and function of patients and

their surrounding world, in the face of this each individual constructs different meanings. One form

of addressing perceptions about the process of an illness is through the explanatory model of illness

(EMI) (38), which defines a person’s conceptions about their illness, the attributed causes, and

their symptoms, which are interpreted as practical decisions in order to attend to or cure the illness.

In this sense, the IPC, as the family member who is available to meet the needs of the patient and is

responsible for making decisions in the diagnosis and treatment of the illness, deserves a separate

examination of the meaning of depression in their family member. During the investigation into the

EMIs, the perception of symptoms, the concept of depression, the illness origins, the fears around

the illness, and the impact attributed to the illness were explored. The initial depressive symptoms

that the IPCs detected in their children were in regard to changes in their behavior (irritability,

social isolation, lack of motivation) and modifications in their daily activities (abandonment of

their hobbies or failure to fulfill obligations), aspects that were not considered out of the expected.

In the words of the participants, their perception of the patients’ manifestations was it was laziness,

and that they were related to their stage of the life cycle. And although, during the interview, they

were able to recognize indicators (somatic discomfort, lack of energy, disturbances in attention and

concentration, disturbances in sleep, school failure) that could have suggested a problem beyond

everyday discomfort, the interviewees acknowledge that, at the time, they failed to recognize that

they were part of a mental illness. Informal primary caregivers normalized the manifestations of

the patients, instead of considering them part of a disease according to Olga et al. (2020).

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers choose Ex post Facto as a research design to serve as methodology of this

study. The purpose of Ex Post Facto is to create a study with a pre-existing concept which is the

role caregiving providing physical support and changing this variable into caregiving providing

emotional support. The researchers will gather information from the students of Masbate National

Comprehensive Highschool by the means of questionnaire with open ended questions.

Source of Data

This researcher will provide questionnaires to the Grade 12 caregiving students of Masbate

National Comprehensive Highschool. The questionnaires will be given to them through online or

personally following the health protocols. It will be given to them depending on the capability of

the respondents. The gathered data from the respondents based on their personal perspective will

be the basis for the result of this research.

a method of gathering data that helps collecting opinions from different respondents. The data

collected will be analyzed to get the result.

Sampling Plan

This study will have only 10 respondents and will use availability sampling as the sampling

plan. Knowing that caregiving students are very busy, researchers decided to choose a respondent

who is available and willing to participate in this study. The researchers choose them to be

respondent because their opinion is validated and the response from them will surely be useful in

conducting this study.

CHAPTER IV
Research Findings

Data Analysis

During the analyzation of data the researchers found out that most of the students

that participated in the research are experiencing emotional problems. There were more students

who experience anxiety than depression. However, there were some who experience both. Most of

the students receives support from their families, friends and God. However, some of them do not

receive any support at all and preferred to keep their problems by themselves. One of them stated

that she doesn’t need any support from anyone because she believes that she`s capable in

supporting herself.

The caregiving students considers mental health as a very essential thing. One of them

compared it to be important as the air that we breath. It is said to be important because having a

healthy mind will keep them away from anxiety and depression.

Most of the students are open with the concept of considering the caregivers as their source

of emotional support even if they already have their friends and family because according to the

gathered data the more support you get the more you can overcome emotional problems. Some of

them says that if there`s this thing that caregivers provides emotional support, they will surely hire

one. But some of them disagreed because they`re already contented with the support they get.

Base on the analyzation of data, caregiver are capable of providing emotional support by

giving advices and being on the side of the student during the time where the student is being

attacked by either depression or anxiety or even both.

Interpretation

Through this research the researchers discovered that every student has their own emotional

problems to deal with and they need support to handle this kind of matters. Some of them doesn’t

need a caregiver to help them deal with their problems but others do, they need someone to help

them and if there`s any caregiver who`s wiling to provide emotional support they will hire one. In

conclusion the existence of a caregiver who provides emotional support can become a reality

however it still depends on the student who experiences emotional problems if they will hire one.
