CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The point of this research is to identify if there is a possibility for the students to consider
the caregivers as a source of emotional support. We all know that caregivers are known in
providing direct physical care to the children’s, elderly people or chronically ill persons. They
never had a role in a teenager`s life unless they have disability. However, we all know that there
many students who suffers from anxiety and depression. The researchers would like to know if
how significant it is for the caregiving students to maintain their emotional health. Researchers
would also like to know if there is a chance that they seek help from the caregivers to face the
emotional struggles they`ve been going through and in what possible way a caregiver can help
them.
Depression and anxiety disorders are different, but people with depression often experience
symptoms similar to those of an anxiety disorder, such as nervousness, irritability, and problems
sleeping and concentrating. But each disorder has its own causes and its own emotional and
behavioral symptoms. In fact 1 out of 5 students have a diagnosable emotional disorder and 1 out
of 10 young people have mental health challenge that is severe enough to impair how they function
at home, school and in the community. And it believed to continuously increase due to the
pandemic.
Considering the situation that there are some students who have no one to talk to and
continuously suffering from emotional problems but doesn’t want yet to seek help from a
psychiatrist. That what makes the researchers more curious about the possibility of considering the

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES
According to Thomas et al. (2015) to detect and describe caregivers' current need of
support, the concept of “unmet needs” was endorsed from patient-oriented psychological research.
Following this concept, unmet needs are defined as the “requirement for some desirable, necessary,
different domains of frequently unmet needs (e.g, emotional and psychological, comprehensive
cancer care, and information. Female caregivers, non-spouses, and caregivers reporting distress,
anxiety, and/or depression are considered to be at a higher risk of unmet support needs. However,
to the best of our knowledge there is no comprehensive study including a broad range of possible
medical, social, and psychological predictors to identify the group of caregivers at highest risk.
In fact, Soothill et al. (2015) demonstrated that cancer caregivers can have considerably
more unmet needs than the patients they care for. Furthermore, it appears that there is a significant
spouses, and caregivers reporting distress, anxiety, and/or depression are considered to be at a
higher risk of unmet support needs. However, to the best of our knowledge there is no

Ai Wei (2020) concluded that mental health such as stress, anxiety and depression have
been on the rise in recent time among different groups of people in the emerging challenging
society and especially among university students. University is a place where most adolescents
would experience a change phase in life, discovering their identity as well as experiencing several
challenges. All these pressures might cause students to suffer from anxiety or stress or in some
cases severe depression, which could lead them to isolate themselves from other people, or to have
poor academic performance or very low self-esteem as well as dropping out from the universities.
This is quite a dangerous trend because if such students are not treated early, the chances for their
situation to worsen or ultimately attempting suicide would be high. Several technologies have been
utilized to help assist clinicians and patients to confront and help mitigate health problems.
Technologies such as eHealth, or mHealth which utilizes smartphones and remote patient
monitoring systems (RPMS) have been widely used in the healthcare and are proven to be efficient
and quite reliable to help those who suffer from health issues. In this project, a remote mental
health monitoring system (RMHMS) has been proposed to enable lecturers as well as university
administration and therapists/counsellors to track students’ level of stress, anxiety and depression
and swiftly engage those who suffer from stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Students who
suffer from severe stress, anxiety symptoms and depression, will be given more attention by the
university’s administrations based on the information available from the remote mental health
monitoring system. The proposed system will help facilitate early interventions and treatment such
as referrer to counselling sessions or seeking psychiatric help. The system equally incorporates
alert systems to students’ friends or families and their caregivers to intimate them of their situation
too so that they may help the students to overcome their mental health issues before getting
worsened.

Ibrahim et al. (2016) reported that psychological distress is defined as the discomfort of a
patient while experiencing symptoms of disorders or anxiety before and after treatment. It refers to
the context of strain, stress, and distress. Past research often described it as an emotional suffering
condition with symptoms of depression and anxiety. These symptoms can range from a person
showing disinterest, feeling sad, or losing hope to depression, anxiety, nervousness followed by
some somatic symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and insomnia.8 Psychological distress is not
merely associated with the inability to conduct daily chores, but it is also a measure of the other
psychiatric disorder symptoms, such as major depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
Caregivers also tend to experience social problems because of the people around them. Perceived
stigma and symptoms of depression among caregivers were significantly associated. Society often
relates serious mentally ill patients with violence and ~70% of the respondents included in their
study believed that such patients were dangerous. This leads to a stereotype and discrimination
against caregivers making it even more difficult for them to seek help and support from others. It
could also result in symptoms of serious distress such as depression, sadness, anxiety, physical
Caregivers, in particular spouses, had more severe depression and a higher proportion
reporting tiredness, sadness and less satisfaction with life compared with healthy elderly subjects.
Using linear regression analysis, patient predictors of caregiver distress were depression, functional
and cognitive impairment, agitation, aberrant motor behavior and delusions. Caring for a spouse
with Parkinson's disease is associated with emotional and social distress, underlining the
importance of also assessing the needs of careers. Mental symptoms of parkinsonian patients were
the most consistent and powerful predictors of caregiver distress, suggesting that identification and

treatment of mental symptoms may reduce distress in caregivers of subjects with Parkinson's
The appearance of a disease is an event that impacts the life and function of patients and
their surrounding world, in the face of this each individual constructs different meanings. One form
of addressing perceptions about the process of an illness is through the explanatory model of illness
(EMI) (38), which defines a person’s conceptions about their illness, the attributed causes, and
their symptoms, which are interpreted as practical decisions in order to attend to or cure the illness.
In this sense, the IPC, as the family member who is available to meet the needs of the patient and is
responsible for making decisions in the diagnosis and treatment of the illness, deserves a separate
examination of the meaning of depression in their family member. During the investigation into the
EMIs, the perception of symptoms, the concept of depression, the illness origins, the fears around
the illness, and the impact attributed to the illness were explored. The initial depressive symptoms
that the IPCs detected in their children were in regard to changes in their behavior (irritability,
social isolation, lack of motivation) and modifications in their daily activities (abandonment of
their hobbies or failure to fulfill obligations), aspects that were not considered out of the expected.
In the words of the participants, their perception of the patients’ manifestations was it was laziness,
and that they were related to their stage of the life cycle. And although, during the interview, they
were able to recognize indicators (somatic discomfort, lack of energy, disturbances in attention and
concentration, disturbances in sleep, school failure) that could have suggested a problem beyond
everyday discomfort, the interviewees acknowledge that, at the time, they failed to recognize that
they were part of a mental illness. Informal primary caregivers normalized the manifestations of
the patients, instead of considering them part of a disease according to Olga et al. (2020).

CHAPTER IV
Research Findings
Data Analysis
During the analyzation of data the researchers found out that most of the students
that participated in the research are experiencing emotional problems. There were more students
who experience anxiety than depression. However, there were some who experience both. Most of
the students receives support from their families, friends and God. However, some of them do not
receive any support at all and preferred to keep their problems by themselves. One of them stated
that she doesn’t need any support from anyone because she believes that she`s capable in
supporting herself.
The caregiving students considers mental health as a very essential thing. One of them
compared it to be important as the air that we breath. It is said to be important because having a
healthy mind will keep them away from anxiety and depression.
Most of the students are open with the concept of considering the caregivers as their source
of emotional support even if they already have their friends and family because according to the
gathered data the more support you get the more you can overcome emotional problems. Some of
them says that if there`s this thing that caregivers provides emotional support, they will surely hire
one. But some of them disagreed because they`re already contented with the support they get.

Interpretation
Through this research the researchers discovered that every student has their own emotional
problems to deal with and they need support to handle this kind of matters. Some of them doesn’t
need a caregiver to help them deal with their problems but others do, they need someone to help
them and if there`s any caregiver who`s wiling to provide emotional support they will hire one. In
conclusion the existence of a caregiver who provides emotional support can become a reality
however it still depends on the student who experiences emotional problems if they will hire one.
