Introduction

1 Introduction

These instructions describe how to connect a client, either a laptop or a mobile

device, to a node.

LMT

B A / B
POWER
ADAPTER

Figure 1 How to Connect a Laptop and a Mobile Device

Initial configuration uses the LMT A serial interface. Site LAN access uses the
LMT B Fast Ethernet interface. Some units have a separate LMT A and LMT B
port. If there is only one LMT port, that LMT port is configured as an LMT B port
by default.

The LMT ports have RJ-45 connectors.

2 Prerequisites

Before starting the procedure, the prerequisites listed below must be fulfilled.

2.1 Documents
Make sure that the following documents are read and understood:

— Personal Health and Safety Information

— System Safety Information

2.2 Tools
Make sure that the following tools and equipment are available:

In general:

— An ESD wrist strap

For LMT A:

— A laptop to function as a hyper terminal connected to the LMT port (software

is installed on the laptop for terminal emulation, for example Windows
HyperTerminal).

— A cable for the serial connection, for example, an adapter RJ-45 to DSUB 9
(RNT 247 637/1, included in cable package NTM 503 46/100).

— A USB adapter (to be used if the laptop does not have a serial interface).

— An LMT splitter cable for units with a single LMT port

For LMT B:

— An RJ45 Ethernet cable.

— A laptop or mobile device with Wi-Fi capability

— For a mobile device

• A Wi-Fi router

• The router manual

• Access to a power supply for the router

Prerequisites

2.3 Conditions
The following conditions are met:

— Local access to the site is granted

— There are no restrictions to temporarily disconnect any cables from the

management ports labeled LMT, LMT A, or LMT B on the DU or Baseband

— The LMT ports for RBS 6501 are enabled

— Applicable username and password are available. Username and password

depend on the chosen configuration.

3 Site LAN Connection

3.1 Connect Laptop

Steps

1. Put on the ESD wrist strap and connect it to the available ESD grounding
point.

Do!
Always use an approved ESD wrist strap when working with sensitive equipment.
Damage to components mounted on printed board assemblies can occur if an ESD
wrist strap is not used.

2. Connect the laptop to the LMT B Fast Ethernet interface for Site LAN
connection or the VRX port on the Digital Baseband Advanced (DBA).

a. For laptop: Connect the

Ethernet cable to the
LMT-port as shown.

3. Set IP parameters in the client computer, as follows:

Parameter Value
Default gateway 169.254.2.2

Parameter Value
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
IP address of the client computer An IP address on the same network
as the node, for example 169.254.2.1

4. If there is a firewall enabled in the client computer, turn it off, or, make sure
that it allows traffic with the node.

5. Start the desired element management application, typically available under

EM Applications on the Start menu.

Note: If the application is not available on the client, see document

Installing an Element Management Application.

6. Enter the local node O&M IP address as requested. The IP address is

169.254.2.2.
The response depends on the security configuration. Either the application
opens or a request to log on opens first. The logon is either with the node
password or with an SLS account.

4 Initial Configuration Connection

4.1 Connect Cables

For initial configuration, LMT A is used.

The client computer is connected to the LMT port. LMT A is an RS232 interface. If
a serial interface is missing on the client computer, a USB-adapter must be used.

Figure 2 shows the RS232 cable connection alternatives.

Some units have two LMT ports. If there is only one LMT port, that LMT port is
configured as an LMT B port by default. The LMT A can then be accessed using
the RJ45 T-modular adapter, as shown in Figure 3. This splitter adapter is used as
a temporary cable to get the node up and running. LMT A will be used during
scratch load scenarios where an IP address needs to be defined in the eNodeB.

4.2 Connect to the Serial Port

Prerequisites
The serial cables between the communications port (for example COM1) of the
PC and the serial port (LMT A) of the DU or Baseband are connected.

Steps

1. Use any software for terminal emulation in the PC, for example Windows
HyperTerminal, and configure it for communication over the communications
port with parameters as follows:

Parameter Value
Bits per second 9600
Data bits 8
Parity None
Stop bits 1
Flow Control None

2. In the communication window of the terminal emulation software, press

Enter.
The response depends on security configuration. The response is either a $
prompt, a request to log on with node password, or a request to log on with
an SLS account.
