Purpose of this Assignment

Computer networks have become the essence of our daily lives. Computer networks are the
driving force behind the evolution of computer systems allowing users to access data,
hardware and services regardless of their location. The major purpose of this assignment is to
provide the students an opportunity to exhibit their knowledge in the field of computer
networking, how the network operates, protocols, standards, security considerations and the
prototypes associated with a range of networking technologies.

The assignment will help the students to check their knowledge for configuring and
installation of networking system exploring the range of technologies and troubleshooting the
network. The students will be able to demonstrate their skills and understandings over the
operation of IP data networks, router, switching technologies, IP routing technologies, IP
services and troubleshooting through the completion of this assignment.

Besides technical stuffs, the students will be demonstrating their skills such as communication
literacy, critical thinking, analysis, reasoning and interpretation, which are crucial for gaining
employment and developing academic competence.

The completion of this assignment will illustrate that the student has been able to:

 Examine networking principles and their protocols.

 Examine networking devices and operations.
 Design efficient networked systems.
 Implement and diagnose networked system.

There are two parts based on the scenario. You are required to contextualize the task as per the
given scenario wherever possible.

need to be done individually and the student has to produce an individual assignment.

Scenario

Digital Network Solution is a reputed and well-managed IT Service Provider Company which
is located in Kathmandu. The organization has recently decided to open a new branch in
Pokhara in order to facilitate the general public with its new technological devices and
applications. The central office has decided on the following structure of the office.

There are four departments with the following responsibilities and infrastructure:

 IT Department (14 Computers)

 Finance Department (3 Computers)
 HR Department (6 Computers)
 Sales Department (8 Computers)

You have been hired as an IT officer and your major roles and responsibilities are to Plan,
Manage, design, implement and optimize the network system for the organization considering
IP addressing, Server systems, various other services, Network devices, Security devices, etc.

In order to prepare a report, you will demonstrate that you understand the principles of network
infrastructure management and are able to design, implement and test network systems suitable
for an organization like Digital Network Solution.

Assignment Task – Part 1

Your manager has given you the task of preparing a report on the concepts related to
networking principles and topology, devices and their operating principles and proposing a
topology that will be suitable for the scenario.

You will need to include some elements of theory:

1. A discussion of the various benefits and constraints relating to different network types

 and standards.

2. An explanation of the impact different network topologies have on communication and

bandwidth requirements.

Your report can include a brief comparison of common networking principles and explain how
protocols enable the effectiveness of networked systems.

 The report must include a discussion of the operating principles of the main networking
devices and server types and relate this to the interdependence of workstation hardware
to the appropriate networking software.
 The report can explore a range of available server types, choose and justify a suitable
server for the requirements specification the company has given you with due regard to
cost and performance optimization.

At the end of the report, you can to select a topology and protocol for implementing the system
and critically evaluate it to demonstrate the efficient utilization of a networking system.

Assignment Task – Part 2

After your submission to the manager, you have met expectations as to your theoretical
knowledge and have been given the go-ahead with designing and installing the new network.
You should prepare a document that includes the following tasks:

1. Design a networked system to meet the requirements of the company from the
specification given.

2. Test and evaluate the design to meet the requirements specification, collect user
feedback, and perform an analysis on that with the aim of improving the efficiency of
your designed network.

3. Install and configure the appropriate network services and applications on your
network.

4. Design a maintenance schedule to support the running of your network.

Finally, prepare a technical which shows:

1. You have implemented the network as per your design prepared.

2. A documentation of test results and analysis of the results against the expected results.

3. Recommendation for potential enhancement for the designed network systems.

4. A critical reflection to evaluate your own work and justification of the conclusions.
