Thank You For Joining The Gypsy Jazz Soloing Mini-Course! Lesson #1: Arpeggios, Ornaments and Sound Effect
In this 3-part mini-course, you’ll learn the basics of Gypsy Jazz Picking technique
with a collection of the most popular Gypsy Jazz licks, implemented in a solo etude
over Dark Eyes.
Each lesson will focus on a unique technique and a few phrases that are the core of
Gypsy Jazz. The moment you hear any of these phrases, you just know – Oh yes!
This is Gypsy Jazz!
All these phrases came from one source – the legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt.
Django was a Jazz Guitarist. But his style laid the foundation for what has come to
be called “Gypsy Jazz,” a new style of Jazz emerged from the core of Django’s
phrasing.
It's these core elements that you will discover during this mini-course.
In this lesson, we’ll focus on phrases with arpeggios and ornaments, with the bonus
of a super sound effect that I especially love.
Yours,
Yaakov Hoter

Fundamentals of Rest-Stroke Picking
Rest-Stroke Picking – Movements
The downstroke uses your elbow to move between strings. It’s like each string has a
different elbow position. When you play the down-stroke, you should come to rest on the
string below. For example - when you hit your 6th string, you should “lean” on your 5th string
with your plectrum. This downstroke is very important and every first note on each string
should be played as a downstroke.
The Sweep continues to the next higher string with the same movement from your elbow.
For example: When you play a downstroke on your 6th string and then move on to the 5th string,
you just have to push your hand further down from your elbow.
The upstroke uses your wrist. Imagine you have a card inside your hand that you want to
quickly glance at and then immediately hide again. The upstroke is fast and short - a flick of the
wrist.
