Assignment I

The document outlines an assignment for a remote sensing course, providing instructions and questions to answer related to satellite sensors, orbits, resolutions, and satellite products. Students are asked to identify advantages of satellite vs aircraft sensors, list example satellites in different orbits, describe parameters of Landsat 5, SPOT, IKONOS, RapidEye and Quickbird, identify satellite products, classify sensors based on data form, discuss scanning modes, and explain what keeps satellites from falling to Earth and crashing into each other.

FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING: Surveying Engineering program
Assignment I Mark: 10%
Remote Sensing course

Instructions:
I. Submission date: 01/04/2014 E.C. 6:00 (local time) (late submission may have deduction)
II. All members of the group must be have equal participate
III. Copy from other group is not allowed (may be rejected)

Answer the following questions accordingly

1. What advantages do sensors carried on board satellites have over those carried on aircraft? Are there
any disadvantages that you can think of?
2. List at least 5 satellite names for each of the following orbits: low earth orbits, medium earth orbit,
geostationary orbits, polar orbits and sun synchronous orbits.
3. Describe the four resolutions, swath width, sensor, operation period and number of spectral bands for
Landsat 5, SPOT, IKONOS, RapidEyes and Quickbird.
4. Using the parameters described on Q3 list five satellite products.
5. Based on energy sources there are two classes of sensors: active and passive sensors. Based on data
form: imaging and non-imaging. Discuss the classification of sensors based on data form in detail.
6. Discuss the two main modes or methods of scanning employed to acquire multispectral image data.
7. What keeps a satellite from falling to Earth?
8. What stops a satellite from crashing into another satellite?
