Week 2

𝑛
1. Let 𝛾𝑛 = (1 + 12 + 31 + … + 𝑛1 ) − ∫1 1𝑡 𝑑𝑡. Show that the sequence {𝛾𝑛 }∞
1 converges. (Hint:
monotone and bounded sequence converges.)
2. A set 𝐴 ⊂ [0, 1] is dense in [0, 1] iff every open interval that intersects [0, 1] contains a
point of 𝐴. Suppose 𝑓 ∶ [0, 1] → ℝ is integrable and 𝑓 (𝑥) = 0, ∀𝑥 ∈ 𝐴. Also assume that
1
𝑓 (𝑥) ≥ 0, ∀𝑥 ∈ [0, 1]. Show that ∫0 𝑓 (𝑥)𝑑𝑥 = 0.
3. Suppose, 𝑓 is integrable on [0, 1]. So, 𝑓 is integrable on [0, 1]. Define, 𝑎𝑛 = 1
𝑛 ∑𝑛𝑘=1 𝑓 ( 𝑛𝑘 ), ∀𝑛.
1
Prove that {𝑎𝑛 } → ∫0 𝑓 𝑑𝑡
4. Suppose, 𝑓 is integrable on [−𝑏, 𝑏] and 𝑓 is an odd function, that is, 𝑓 (−𝑡) = −𝑓 (𝑡), ∀𝑡 ∈
𝑏
[−𝑏, 𝑏]. Prove that ∫−𝑏 𝑓 𝑑𝑥 = 0. If 𝑓 is an even function, that is, 𝑓 (−𝑡) = 𝑓 (𝑡), ∀𝑡 ∈ [−𝑏, 𝑏],
𝑏 𝑏
prove that ∫−𝑏 𝑓 𝑑𝑥 = 2 ∫0 𝑓 𝑑𝑥. (Hint: Use Riemann sums).
5. Use the fundamental theorem of calculus (FTC) to compute the following:
3
(a) ∫0 (𝑥 2 − 𝑥)𝑑𝑥
4
(b) ∫−2 (1 − 𝑥 3 − 𝑥 2 )𝑑𝑥
𝜋/2
(c) ∫0 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 2 𝑑𝑥
Clearly show that the conditions are satisfied before applying FTC.
2𝑥
6. Define 𝑓 ∶ [0, 1] → ℝ as 𝑓 (𝑥) = ∫𝑥 2 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑡 2 𝑑𝑡. What is 𝑓 ′ (𝑥)? (Hint: use transformation of
variable first so that you can apply FTC properly).
7. Define 𝑓 ∶ [0, 2] → ℝ by 𝑓 (𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 for 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 1 and 𝑓 (𝑥) = (𝑥 − 2)2 for 1 < 𝑥 ≤ 2.
Prove that 𝑓 is integrable on [0, 2] and find the integral of 𝑓 over [0, 2].
8. Evaluate the indefinite integrals using transformation of variable.
−1 √
1 𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑥 𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝑡
∫ 𝑥𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑥 𝑑𝑥, ∫ √1 − 𝑥 2 𝑑𝑥, ∫ 𝑡
𝑑𝑡
