Emerging Perspectives on Distinctions between Romantic Love and Sexual Desire

Title of the First Article

Summary:

Love and desire are fundamentally different subjective experiences with

distinct neurobiological substrates. An individual's sexual predisposition
for the same sex, the other sex, or both sexes may not circumscribe his or
her capacity to fall in love. Role of oxytocin in both love and desire may
contribute to the widely observed phenomenon that women report
experiencing greater interconnections between passion and desire than
men
Essay (insights and realizations):

Despite the fact that sexual desire and romantic love are frequently
experienced together, they are fundamentally different subjective
experiences with separate neurological substrates. The evolutionary
origins of each sort of experience serve as the foundation for these
distinctions. Sexual desire evolved in the context of sexual mating,
whereas romantic love or pair bonding emerged in the context of infant-
caregiver attachment. As a result, not only may individuals feel these
emotions independently, but an individual's sexual preference for the same
sex, the opposite sex, or both sexes may not limit his or her ability to fall in
love with partners of either gender.

Source:

Sexual desire typically denotes a need or drive to seek out sexual objects
or to engage in sexual activities, whereas romantic love typically denotes
the powerful feelings of emotional infatuation and attachment between
intimate partners.
Human Sexuality: How Do Men and Women Differ?
____________________________________
Title of the First Article

Summary:

A large body of scientific research documents four important gender

differences in sexuality. Men's sexuality tends to be more malleable and
capable of change over time. Women place greater emphasis on committed
relationships as a context for sexuality. Aggressiveness is more strongly
linked to sexuality for men than for women.

Essay (insights and realizations):

Four key gender variations in sexuality have been documented by a large

body of scientific study. For starters, men have more sexual desire than
women on a variety of scales. Second, women place a higher value on
committed relationships as a setting for sexuality than males. Third, men's
violence is more firmly tied to their sexuality than women's. Fourth,
women's sexuality is more fluid and adaptable over time than men's. These
male-female disparities are pervasive, affecting not only heterosexuals but
also lesbians and homosexual men's ideas and feelings, as well as their
conduct. The ramifications of these patterns are examined.

Source:

Women have a much more variable sex drive than men, and are far more
responsive to the circumstances in which they are sexually active. Men, he
argues, have a fixed, biologically-determined sex drive that is relatively
insensitive to context; women's sex drives are highly responsive to their
environment.
