Luke 24:13-27
13 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus,
which was seven miles from Jerusalem.
14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and
went with them.
16 But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17 And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one
another as you walk and are sad?"
18 Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, "Are You the
only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there
in these days?"
19 And He said to them, "What things?" So they said to Him, "The things concerning
Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the
people,
20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death,
and crucified Him.
21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed,
besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
22 Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished
us.
23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision
of angels who said He was alive.
24 And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the
women had said; but Him they did not see."
25 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the
prophets have spoken!
26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?"
27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the
Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
We wish to bring our attention to the fact that from the Old Testament, the Lord Jesus
pointed out the Scriptures that spoke of Himself. During His earthly ministry, Jesus had
pointed to the Scriptures stating, "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you
have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. " (John 5:39).

Sermon Notes
Acts 2:29-32
29 "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is
both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him
that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit
on his throne,
31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul
was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
David lived about 1000 years before Christ. Peter in his inaugural sermon quotes from
the Old Testament Scriptures, pointing out that David was a prophet of God. David knew
through what God had revealed to him that one of his descendants would be the Christ,
the Messiah, who would be Ruler on his throne. He also saw and spoke ahead of time
about the resurrection of Christ.
Today, we would like to look at a few Resurrection Psalms, specifically three Psalms
written by David, that foretell the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We will read Psalm 2, Psalm 16, and Psalm 110. These are all short Psalms.
Psalm 2:1-12
A psalm of David
1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against
the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,
3 "Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us."
4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6 "Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion."
7 "I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have
begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the
earth for Your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's
vessel.' "
10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling.

Sermon Notes
12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is
kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
Psalms 16:1-11
A psalm of David
1 Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust.
2 O my soul, you have said to the LORD, "You are my Lord, My goodness is nothing
apart from You."
3 As for the saints who are on the earth, "They are the excellent ones, in whom is all
my delight."
4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god; Their drink offerings
of blood I will not offer, Nor take up their names on my lips.
5 O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot.
6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance.
7 I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the
night seasons.
8 I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be
moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope.
10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see
corruption.
11 You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right
hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalms 110:1-7
A psalm of David
1 The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your
footstool."
2 The LORD shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your
enemies!
3 Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of
holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth.
4 The LORD has sworn And will not relent, "You are a priest forever According to the
order of Melchizedek."
5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.
6 He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall
execute the heads of many countries.
7 He shall drink of the brook by the wayside; Therefore He shall lift up the head.

Sermon Notes
Psalm 110 is a powerful Psalm that reveals Jesus as King and Priest. This Psalm is one of
the Old Testament text that is most quoted in the New Testament.
(Please go through each thought quickly. Do not elaborate too much, else the sermon
will become too long. We do not have to read the Scripture references again. These are
listed below for our understanding based on which these statements are made. Just
mention the references and explain briefly the truth they present.).
#1, YOU ARE MY SON, I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU (Psalm 2:7; Psalm 16:1-7)
Psalm 2
7 "I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have
begotten You.
Psalm 2:7 is quoted in several places in the New Testament referring to the Incarnation
and the earthly life of Christ.
In Acts 13 as the apostles Paul and Barnabas are on their first missionary journey they
come to the city of Antioch in Pisidia, and there in the synagogue, as they preached Paul
quoted Psalm 2:7
Acts 13:29-33
29 Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him
down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.
30 But God raised Him from the dead.
31 He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to
Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people.
32 And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers.
33 God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also
written in the second Psalm: 'YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.'
In Hebrews 1:5; Hebrews 5:5 the write of Hebrews quotes Psalm 2:7.
What an awesome thought that David would speak of the Incarnation, the Eternal Word
becoming flesh, in these terms, ‘you are my Son, today, I have begotten you’. We know
of course, that in the incarnation, the Eternal Word, laid aside His powers as Deity and

took on human form. He submitted Himself to God the Father and yielded to the
anointing of God the Spirit. So the Triune God was fullY expressed on the earth in the
Person of Jesus Christ. And to this incarnate Son of God, the Father said, ‘you are my
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’.
In Psalm 16:1-7 we see a life committed to God. This was true in David’s life as he
sought to live righteously before God. This was truly embodied and fully expressed in
the earthly life of Christ, the Son of God.
The Bible teaches us that Jesus Christ came, died on the Cross to pay for our sins so we
could be forgiven and brought into the family of God. He rose up again the third day,
and He is alive today. He came as the incarnate Son of God, so that He could bring many
sons and daughters to glory and be the captain (chief leader, pioneer, author) of our
salvation (Hebrews 2:10).
As the Incarnate Son of God, Our Captain. He is our Model. Our Perfect Example. To
know how to live as a son and daughter of God, look to Jesus. Follow Him.
Psalm 16:8-11 is quoted by Peter in his inaugural sermon in Acts 2:25-28 with reference
to Jesus Christ.
Paul references Psalm 16:10 in his sermon at Antioch of Pisidia, in Acts 13:35.
sheol, or hades in Greek, the place of the dead (This refers to the compartment in hell
called 'paradise' or 'Abraham's bosom', that once held Old Testament saints).

Sermon Notes
He has conquered the one who had the power of death, the devil (Hebrews 2:14).
He has disarmed all of satan’s hosts and rendered them powerless (Colossians 2:14-15).
Revelation 1:18
I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I
have the keys of Hades and of Death.
As our Resurrected Savior, He has authority over hell, death and the grave. He causes us
to overcome. He causes us to live victorious. Because He lives, we also will live. He is our
hope beyond the grave.
The Lord Jesus references Psalm 110:1 in speaking of Himself in Matthew 22:41-45.
The apostle Paul, and so also the writer of Hebrews refers to Christ reigning over His
enemies and them being made His footstool in 1 Corinthians 15:24-28; Hebrews 10:13.
The Lord Jesus has been glorified and is seated at the Father’s right hand.
He has a name above very name (Philippians 2:9-11)
All authority in heaven and earth is His (Matthew 28:18)
And all His enemies will be made His footstool. The devil and all his diabolic hosts, and
everything they can conceive, are underneath His feet. All authority and power in

heaven and earth belongs to Jesus Christ. He is our glorified King. He has a name above
all names.
As our Glorified King, all authority in heaven and earth belongs to Him. He has a name
above all names. Kingdom authority flows from His throne unto us, His own. We walk in
His authority and dominion and administer that here on earth.
Melchizedek was the king of Salem (later Jerusalem) and he was also the priest of the
Most High God (Genesis 14:18). Melchizedek is a type, pointing to Jesus. Jesus is the
True Priest and True King.
He is a Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek is referenced several times in the
book of Hebrews (Hebrews 5:6,10; Hebrews 6:20; Hebrews 7:1-11,15,17,21).
Hebrews 4:14-16
14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but
was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and
find grace to help in time of need.
As our High Priest, He represents us before the Faither, He lives to make intercession for
us, He aids us in our time of need. He is the High Priest of our confession, the words we
speak expressing our faith in Him and His Word.

3 "Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us."
4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:
Psalm 2:1-2 is mentioned as a Psalm of David and quoted in Acts 4:25-26, when they
faced threats from religious leaders and persecutors.
No matter what the strong, the mighty, the powerful of the earth do against the name
of Christ, they will not prevail.
God is not in anyway intimidated by their words or efforts.
He who sits in the heavens shall laugh. He will bring all their works to nothing.
As our Exalted Lord, He is King of kings and Lord of Lords. Nothing and no one can stop
the advancement of His Kingdom here on earth. To the increase of His government and
His Kingdom there will be no end. This Gospel of the Kingdom is being proclaimed in all
the nations of the earth.
#6, HE WILL RULE OUT OF ZION OVER THE NATIONS (Psalm 2:6-9; Psalm 110:2,5-7)
Psalm 2
6 "Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion."
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the
earth for Your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's

Psalm 110
2 The LORD shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your
enemies!
5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.
6 He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall

Psalm 2:6,9 and Psalm 110:2 are is used in reference to Jesus Christ in Revelation 12:5,
Revelation 19:15 and Revelation 20:4-5. Jesus will rule over the nations with a rod of
iron. And He will rule out of Zion. The rod, sceptre, or rule of His power.
Psalm 110:5-7 refer to the final battle of Armageddon and Christ’s conquest over all the
opposing armies of the earth. ‘He shall drink of the brook by the wayside’ a picture
depicting a conquering warrior refreshing himself after completing his conquests. ‘He
shall lift up the head’, indicating that He will be exalted over the nations.
As our Coming King, He is coming back to set up His Kingdom on the earth. He will rule
from Zion, over all the nations for a thousand years. We shall rule and reign with Him.
#7, SERVE HIM, VOLUNTEER FOR HIM (Psalm 2:11-12; Psalm 110:3)
Psalm 2
11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is
kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
Psalm 110
3 Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of
holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth.
We are called to serve Him both here in this life and in the life to come.
He alone is worthy to be feared and served.
To “kiss the Son” signifies friendship and submission. It also has the idea of embracing
His discipline and receiving His instruction.
We serve Him clothed and arrayed in holiness, with the strength of new life given to us
by His Spirit.
As His servants, His volunteers, we live in friendship and submission to Him. We are His
ambassadors. we are ambassadors of Christ, we are sons and daughters of the King, we
are here to extent Kingdom influence.

SERMON OUTLINE
David spoke prophetically about the incarnation, the resurrection, and glorification of
Jesus Christ, about one thousand years ahead of time. In this Resurrection Sunday
(Easter Sunday) sermon we look at three Psalms of David (Psalm 2, Psalm 16, Psalm 110
we call them Resurrection Psalms) and highlight the prophetic announcements David
made, well ahead of time. This message culminates with a call to serve the Lord
willingly, clothed in holiness and with the freshness and zeal He imparts to us.
