Define management of innovation and give an example of how a firm can manage innovation processes.
Management of innovation is a comprehensive approach and implementation of managerial
problem solving and action. This approach recognizes the link between innovation streams and the organization (teams and evolution). The manager leads and serves as an architect/engineer, politician/network builder, and artist/scientist as implementations are made in the management of politics, control, and resistance to change. A supportive atmosphere fosters creativity and promotes an environment of discovery. A firm can manage the innovation process through offering an array of company benefits and process. For example consider Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS), a software developer providing clients with business solutions. The nature of software development can be mentally challenging; therefore, SAS stimulates productivity by offering an environment to nourish creativity and promote thinking outside the box. While SAS has a goal to create a stress-free environment (due to the mental challenges employees experience on a daily basis) their focus is on comfort and convenience. They need sharp thinkers and originality. SAS strives to maintain a stress free work environment by nourishing the conveniences and comforts (through flexible work hours, pop up themed events, onsite gym and childcare, etc.) to engage employees to be motivated, loyal, and dedicated to providing high quality performance results. Happy employees promote good customer service, which in turn helps to achieve organizational success. Through test perks (for example: 3,000 pieces of art displayed and two full-time artists on staff), SAS has established and developed a culture which recognizes the importance of the work atmosphere, along with benefits to satisfy employees and create a highly profitable business.
