Introduction & Philosophical Statement

Welcome to my Classroom Management Plan Portfolio! In it I will be

covering different ideas that I would like to implement in my classroom such as

classroom management strategies, my discipline system, what procedures will I

use and so much more. I developed this plan for a primary grade classroom

because that is the grade range, I hope to teach one day. In it I have tried to

envision what my classroom will be like and have tried to make it reflect my

future teaching style. Many of these ideas have been inspired by my previous

work experience, what I have learned so far in UH COE program, and teacher

blogs. I hope to refer back to this plan in the future and modify it as needed.

I aspire for my teaching philosophy to model positive teaching practices.

The theories of Rudolph Dreikurs and Thomas Gordon really resonated with me

and would like to apply their ideas for my own classroom environment. Gordon’s

theory focuses on teaching self-discipline, using i-messages, and actively

listening to students. I would like to apply these ideas into the classroom because

it looks at students as more than just students. By teaching self- disciple we are

helping students learn social-emotional skills they need. I definitely want to use

i-messages in my classroom because it allows for me to address behavior

problems without personally attacking my students. This is important to me

because I want to be able to build meaningful relationships with my students. I

also want to apply Dreikurs’s ideas of a democratic classroom. I strive for my

students to be able to have autonomy and ownership in the classroom.

Parent Back to School Survey
Below you will see a brief google form survey I have created for the first
day of school. I want a quick and easy way to touch base with all the parents of
my classroom to start building that relationship with them and the student. It is
6

important to me to know about their needs and concerns for the school year.

All About Me Icebreaker

This worksheet is a fun way for the students to get know each other as

well as for me to get know more about my students. It is also a helpful tool to
7

spark up conversation. Perfect for the first day! I would use a variation of this

sample depending on the grade level and their writing skills. Source

Social Contract
In order to create a fair, positive environment we will be creating a social

contract together. This will help students have a sense of ownership and help
8

them hold themselves accountable for their choices.

Absent Work
I will put into place this absent work system in the classroom, so students

know exactly what they need to when they miss school as well as where they can

find the work, they missed that day. This will promote structure in the classroom

and help students hold themselves accountable for their work.

Positive Messages
Part of my philosophy is building a classroom environment on positivity

and empowering students. I will have posters that help inspire and build my

student’s confidence. The goal is to create a safe space where my students can

thrive.

Morning Sign-In
I want to incorporate a sign-in system in my classroom in which students

can check-in on the chart to show that they are present. This will help make

taking attendance easier and faster.

15

Voice Levels Chart

I am incorporating this chart to help signal to my students where our

voices need to be. This is a fun way to teach students to monitor their voice level

and help keep the classroom under control.

Classroom Expectations
I chose this classroom expectations because I feel all these behaviors

help define the positive classroom environment I want to create. These

expectations are also important to help maintain order in the classroom.

18

Ms. Rios’ Classroom Expectations

1. Be respectful to the teacher, classmates and yourself!

2. Follow teacher instructions!

3. Be prepared for class each day!

4. Take responsibility for your actions!

5. Participate and be a good listener!

6. Help each other when needed!

7. Be kind to others!

8. Make good choices!

9. Respect school property!

10. Have fun!

Calming Corner
I want to implement a calming corner in my classroom to help
students who are having a rough time in the classroom. The calming corner will
help student identify what they are feeling and what they can to do help them
feel better. This will not only help behavior problems in the classroom, but it will
also support students in learning emotional regulation.
19

Disciplinary Hierarchy
I created this hierarchy to have a general idea on what disciplinary steps

to follow in my classroom. This will work as a guide help me know what action

to take and when to take it.

20

Level 4
After all other resources
and methods have been
exhausted I will get
administration involved.
Refferal

Level 3
Level 3 behaviors are more
disruptive and sever than level 2
behaviors. The calming corner will
continue to be used as well as
private conversation with me. In
this level I will make a parent
phone call and schedule a parent
conference if possible or needed.

Level 2
After multiple warnings and logical consequence, I will
use other consequences such as recess time deduction,
switch seats, and private conversation with me. I will
also use the calming corner in this level. Make note in
conduct folder about the issue.

Level 1
For minor behaviors students will receive a nonverbal cue.
If behaviors continue after 2 nonverbal warnings, stuents
will receive a verbal warning with logical consequence.

Behavior Chart
I will send a behavior chart similar to the one below weekly, so parents can

be informed of how their children are doing in the classroom and what they need

support on. This will promote open communication between the parents and I.

Motivation

Shout Out Bulletin Board

I want to use a shout out bulletin board to spread kindness in my

classroom and encourage my students to keep up the work. I will write shout out

for students who are doing a great job and even make it a reward for students
23

who are staying on task to go up and write a shout out as well. This will help

increase student motivation.

Source

Reward Coupons
I will incorporate reward coupons to be a fun easy way to motivate my

students. Students can earn these throughout the school year with good

behavior, turning in homework on time, good grades, etc.

interactive way to get students focused. These fun education videos get students

moving and burn off some extra energy in transitions.

Brain Break Activities

I want to use brain break cards in the classroom because they are different

activities students can use to get them refocused and ready to continue learning.
27

I will let the students chose what brain break activity they want to use so they an

feel like they have ownership.
