Philosophy Module 2

Quite literally, the term "philosophy" means, "love of wisdom." In a broad sense, philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other.

Activity: Inquire and Discover

Read the passage from “Plato’s Allegory of the Cave”
(Critical thinking, Communication, Character)
“Some prisoners are chained inside a cave, facing the back wall. Behind
them is a fire, with people passing in front of it. The prisoners cannot turn
their heads, and have always been chained this way. All they can see and hear
are shadows passing back and forth and the echoes bouncing off the wall in
front of them. One day, a prisoner is freed, and dragged outside the cave. He
is blinded by the light, confused, and resists being led outside. But, eventually
his eyes adjusts so that he able to see clearly the things around him, and even
the sun itself. He came to realize that the things he thought were real were
merely shadows of real things, and that life outside of the cave is far better
than his previous life in chains. He pities those still inside. He ventures back
into the cave to share his discovery with the others—only to be ridiculed
because he can hardly see (his eyes have trouble at first re-adjusting to the
darkness). He tried to free the other prisoners but they violently resisted (the
other prisoners refuse to be freed and led outside, and they even tried to kill
him)”.

2. This story demonstrates that individuals have a very limited view of the world.
The guys within the cave knew nothing else since they had never been exposed to
the outer world. Reality existed only for them there. However, one of them was
given the opportunity to see the world outside of the cave and learned how little
they truly knew.It is difficult to persuade those who refuse to admit that they do not
know everything. Although the free guy was correct, the others derided him. They
refused to even consider it since they were accustomed to their current way of life.
On top of that, he couldn't see the dark cave the same way he used to. Once you
gain knowledge, people who do not understand will be diificult to persuade.

3.How does this passage from Plato help you turn your attention toward the
right thing (i.e., truth, beauty, justice and goodness)?
This passage has reminded me that no matter what, we should focus on doing the
right thing. It is our responsibility to embrace truth, justice, kindness, and beauty,
even if others do not always believe you. After all, it expands our minds and opens
up new opportunities for us. The story has also taught me not to become stuck in
our own echo chambers and to always explore beyond what we already know.

Truth is the trait of being true to facts or reality. I will speak the
truth to others by trusting ourselves,Be honest with yourself
first, and finally pause and ask yourself what you want as a
consequence.
