Chapter Viii: The Nano World

Nanomaterials can be created naturally, as byproducts of combustion, or purposefully engineered to have special functions. Their small size means they exhibit different physical and chemical properties than bulk materials. Before manufacturing nanomaterials, factors like environmental risks and intended uses must be considered. Nanotechnology can help sustainability by saving resources and reducing pollution in products, processes, and applications. Examples of nanomaterials include metal and semiconductor nanoparticles used in quantum dots and catalysts. Nanoparticles are added to products like sunscreen and fabrics to impart useful properties.

CHAPTER VIII: THE NANO WORLD

Directions: Answer the questions and Activities based on the topic discussed and understanding.

1. What are nanomaterials and how are they made?

Nanomaterials can occur naturally, be created as the by-products of combustion reactions, or be
produced purposefully through engineering to perform a specialised function. These materials can have
different physical and chemical properties to their bulk-form counterparts.

2. What are the factors that need to be considered before manufacturing materials through
nanotechnology?
What are the factors that need to be considered before manufacturing materials through
nanotechnology? -The materials needed -Environment risks -The use of that material invented.

3. What are the contributions of nanotechnology for the improvement and sustainability of our
environment?
Nanotechnological products, processes and applications are expected to contribute significantly to
environmental and climate protection by saving raw materials, energy and water as well as by reducing
greenhouse gases and hazardous wastes.

4. How do you describe Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at the nanoscale, at dimensions between
approximately 1 and 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications.

5. Have you ever seen a nanomaterial? What is it? What material you used?

Nanoparticles or nanocrystals made of metals, semiconductors, or oxides are of particular interest for
their mechanical, electrical, magnetic, optical, chemical and other properties. Nanoparticles have been
used as quantum dots and as chemical catalysts such as nanomaterial-based catalysts.

6. Is nanotechnology helpful in this society or not? Explain to us why.

Nanotechnology is helping to considerably improve, even revolutionize, many technology and industry
sectors: information technology, homeland security, medicine, transportation, energy, food safety, and
environmental science, among many others.

7. Give a sample product made from a nanomaterial.

Nanoparticles have been added to sunscreens for years to make them more effective. Two particular
types of nanoparticles commonly added to sunscreen are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. When used
in textiles, nanoparticles of silica can help to create fabrics that repel water and other liquids.

8. What is a Nanoscale?

of a size measurable in nanometers or microns.

9. What is the process for Nanomanufacturing?

Nanomanufacturing involves scaled-up, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing of nanoscale

materials, structures, devices, and systems. It also includes research, development, and integration of
top-down processes and increasingly complex bottom-up or self-assembly processes.

10. What is the concept of nanotechnology and nanoscience?

Nanoscience is a convergence of physics, materials science and biology, which deal with manipulation of
materials at atomic and molecular scales; while nanotechnology is the ability to observe measure,
manipulate, assemble, control, and manufacture matter at the nanometer scale.
