No Assignment Policy
However, because assignments and other schoolwork can be exhausting and stressful,
students must make time for themselves. Fortunately, Sen. Grace Poe introduced legislation that
would prohibit teachers from assigning homework or doing schoolwork on weekends. The
Senate Bill 966, also known as the "No Homework Law," promotes the welfare of teachers and
students, protects them from conditions that may harm their health and right to a balanced life,
and upholds equality among students from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
First, according to House Bill 3611 filed by Deputy Speaker and Sorsogon
Representative Evelina Escudero; Homework/assignments can deprive students and parents
precious quality time for rest, relaxation and interaction after school hours and even on
weekends.” Personal time, in my opinion, is essential for students and parents because it
provides a break from all of the workload that students receive at school. It is also important to
discuss how you are feeling and how your parents have been observing you because this
strengthens the relationship between parents and students. Family time is also important because
not all ideas, particularly those concerning the family, are taught in school. Also according to
(Kuptel, J. 2021); Students operate best when they are well rested and ready to go. A weekend
with no homework would help them to be fresh and ready on Monday morning. Weekend
assignments tend to be longer and more difficult. Weekends, I believe, help students refresh their
minds and reduce the possibility of having a lot of stress. Weekends should be an exemption for
schoolwork because students, especially at young ages, are not good at coping with stress and
there are other more factors that student’s experience that affects their mental health rather than
schoolwork. According to a study conducted by the OECD, they found out that after around four
hours of homework per week, the additional time invested in homework has a negligible impact
on performance. As they stated” asking our children to put in an hour or more per day of
dedicated homework time, we are not only not helping them, but according to the
aforementioned studies — we are hurting them, both physically and emotionally.” In addition,
according to a research they conducted, they found out that “excessive homework is associated
with high stress levels, physical health problems and lack of balance in children’s lives; 56% of
the students in the study cited homework as a primary stressor in their lives.”
