Answer the following questions in brief: -

Q a. Name the different food groups.


Ans. The main food groups are: -
i. Carbohydrates
ii. Fats
iii. Proteins
iv. Vitamins
v. Minerals
Apart from this, food also contains water and roughage.

Q b. Why is it necessary to include fats in our diet?


Ans. Fats provide us with the maximum energy and they keep our body
warm hence it is necessary to include fats in our diet.

Q c. What are nutrients?


Ans. Food contains substances that are necessary for survival, good
health and growth of the body. These substances are called nutrients.

Q d. What is a balanced diet?


Ans. A diet that contains all the required nutrients, roughage and water
in the correct amount is called a balanced diet.

Q e. What is the role of roughage in the diet?


Ans. Roughage helps us to get rid of the undigested food.

Q f. Why is it important to take water in adequate amount?


Ans. Water helps to digest food and flush out wastes from the body. It
also helps the body to absorb nutrients properly.

Answer the following questions in details: -

Q a. Explain the role of carbohydrates and proteins in our diet with examples.
Ans. Carbohydrates-
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body. People use
energy to do their daily work. People like sportsmen, laborers’ and even
children, who do a lot of physical work, need to have a good supply of
carbohydrates.
For example- bread, rice, wheat, potato, banana etc.
Protein-
Proteins are required for the growth of the body and the repair of worn-
out cells. It is important for children to have protein-rich food because it helps
them to grow. When we are hurt and our body gets injured, proteins help
repair our body by making new cells.
For example-milk, pulses, eggs, cheese, meat etc.

Q2. Why is exercise important for us? Name some forms of exercises.
Ans. Regular exercise is important to keep the body healthy and fit.
Exercise makes our muscles and heart strong.
Running, cycling and playing outdoor games are different forms of exercises.
Practicing yoga is also good as it relaxes the mind and body.

Q3. How can we prevent wastage of food? What are the different methods of
food preservation?
Ans. Food is essential for us, so we should take the following steps to
avoid its wastage.
a) Start with a small serving of food and take more if you need them.
b) Recycle leftover food into another dish for the next meal.
c) Buy just what you need. This helps reduce wastage and saves time
and money.
d) Store cooked food, fruits and raw vegetables in the refrigerator to
avoid spoilage.
e) Storage of food grains should be properly done in godowns to keep
them safe from rain, water seepage and rodents.
f) Seasonal vegetables and fruits should be stored in proper cold
storages.

Different methods of food preservation are : -


i. Cooking- Some food items are eaten raw but most have to be
cooked.
ii. Freezing- The low temperature inside a refrigerator helps to keep
germs away.
iii. Canning- Canning is a method in which food items like jam and juice
are heated to a high temperature, then cooled and stored in airtight
containers.
iv. Drying- Some food items like mint, red chilies and raisins are dried,
that is, water is removed from them.
v. Adding preservatives- Preservatives are certain chemicals added to
food to prevent it from getting spoilt.
a. Pickling- Salt and oil are added to food items to preserve them.
b. Jellying- Fruits & vegetables are kept in sugar syrup for making
jam and jelly.

Q4. Name any two minerals that our body needs. How do they help us?
Ans. Calcium & Iron.
Calcium makes our bones and teeth strong and is found in milk

and milk products.


Iron is needed for making blood in our body and is found in leafy
vegetables like spinach and fruits like bananas.

Q1. Why is it important for us to have all kinds of food?


Ans. To keep our body healthy we need a balanced diet which provides
us with all kinds of nutrients. So, it’s important for us to have all kinds of food.

Q2. Why do we drink more water in summer than in winter?


Ans. During summer season our body loses too much water in the
form of sweat unlike the winter season. Hence , to avoid dehydration we must
drink more water in the summer season.
