CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
PROJECT CONTEXT
The Southern Mindanao Institute of Technology (SMIT) is located along
the National Highway, Brgy. Buenaflor, Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, a private
educational institution, run by Mr. Federico S. Señeres, Sr. And the president of
this institution it was conceived and started operation in the year 1985. Southern
Mindanao Institute of Technology has different departments, namely
Elementary, Junior High School, Senior High School, and college departments.
The college department has different courses which are the BSIT/ACT, HRM,
Midwifery, Education, BSBA, and Criminology.
Southern Mindanao Institute of Technology is a none-sectarian school is
committed to providing quality, relevant and holistic education for the community
through efficient and effective faculty and staff, adequate and appropriate
instructional facilities, innovative teaching strategies that will develop a
competent and committed person. In each department, the information system
established in this study was used to provide information for updating activities.
Just offers information for a system project.
The student handbook is a book that gives useful information about the
college. It covers the grading system, rules and regulations, enrolment
requirements, and other facts relevant to the institution. The distribution of the
student handbook is done to every newly hired faculty and enrolled student to
keep them aware and understand policies, rules, and regulations about the
operation of the College.

PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION
To aim the SMIT Student Handbook apps is runs on android devices in an
offline setting. However, the usual problem with the current method is that they
usually forget to bring the handbook; some lost it and noted that the hard copy
handbook is somewhat boring and not interactive. Likewise, the handbook is
reprinted every time that there are changes or updates to the contents, with
trees being cut down to produce paper and contributing to our problem in
climate change.
OBJECTIVES
General Objective
The current version of the handbook is in the form of a book bind one
which is prone to tear, damage, and loss. To prevent or minimize the stated
dilemmas, the researchers had come up with an idea to develop SMIT Student
Handbook apps.
Specific Objective
To be able to design and develop SMIT Student Handbook apps that are
responsive and will automatically adjust according to the screen resolution
of the student’s device.
To convert the hard copy version of the handbook to mobile-based which
will make it easier for the students to browse and read the content of the
handbook using their mobile devices.
To encourage the students to read their handbook and easily browse it.
To create a user-friendly application, with easy navigation that is available
for download anytime.
To develop an application for the students that has an adjustable font size
for easier reading and understanding.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES
LOCAL LITERATURE
E-Learning via Android Application
This project focuses on developing a mobile application that includes the
major functionalities of the UTP E-Learning website which are used by students,
into a stand-alone mobile application (M-Learning). UTP E-Learning is a website
created for students to ease the usage of the website, it is also a platform for
the students to upload and download any education related notes or files.
Despite the importance of UTP E-Learning website to all students, the
effectiveness and efficiency of this website are still not up to its maximum
potential.
Students are not really utilizing this website to its maximum potential
simply because they are not surfing this site very often when they are mobile or
away from a pc. Hence any important announcements made by lecturers or by
UTP itself, sometimes do not reach the students in time.
The role of UTP E-Learning website in helping the students in their
studies could be a failure if it is not fully utilized in the best possible manner.
Hence, the main objective of this project is to develop a platform for the
students to use the UTP E-Learning website through a mobile device (Android).
Besides that, this project revolves around the study of the primary usage of E-
learning website to find out the key features that will be included in the
5

application. The interaction process will be easier as the M-Learning will be
installed into their mobile phone as an android application.
LIBRARY MOBILE APPS: FOR EFFECTIVE SERVICES OF LIBRARY
Smartphones have made it possible to get connected with any related
organization from anywhere for accessing valuable library resources. This paper
focuses on providing library services through Mobile Apps. The paper explains
the need for creating mobile apps to the library for better service. The important
ingredient of the article is the ‘Contents of the mobile library app’ which outlines
the contents of the app. Some of the existing library mobile apps are listed and
brief information about the apps has been specified. Even it provides the web
links of various mobile apps and the nature of resources available through those
apps. Some of the mobile app developers are been discussed briefly which
includes their web link. The paper even the concentrates on promotion and
evaluation of the library mobile app.
Digital Student Handbook of the University of the Immaculate Conception
for Android
The primary purpose of the study was to develop a tool that will take
advantage of the fact that many students of the University of the Immaculate
Conception (UIC) bring their cellular phones or tablets everyday, and that they
prefer the student handbook be installed on their gadgets rather than be made
available as a hard copy. Thus, a digital student handbook software was created
for Android devices. This was developed following a Rapid Action Development
(RAD) method which is a proven and tested software development process
model. The analysis phase of the chosen process model involved the
identification of ways in which the contents of the student handbook are
presented in a more readable way, which included convenient content-searching

mechanisms compared to a portable document format (PDF) file. Designs were
made to follow the results of the analysis.

REQUIREMENT ANALYSIS
In the Requirement Analysis, the researchers first assessed the
requirements of the application was developed by using HTML. The markup
tells the Web browser how to display a Web page’s words and images for the
user. The markup tells the Web browser how to display a Web page’s words
and images for the user. The CSS, a Cascading style sheet that is used to
format the layout of Web pages. They can be used to define text styles, table
sizes, videos, and other aspects of Web pages that previously could only be
defined in a page’s HTML, and the Apache Cordova, a platform used to convert
the HTML, CSS, and javascript into APK to run into the Android phone.
The application used the following software and hardware requirements
for the development and improvement of the system/application. Software
Requirements: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: For the design and layout of the
application Apache Cordova: is a platform for building native mobile
applications using HTML, CS, and JavaScript. This allows you to build mobile
applications locally. Android SDK: The Android SDK provides you the API
libraries and developer tools necessary to build, test, and debug apps for
Android.

DESIGN PHASE
The proponents used laptops, with the operating system of Windows 10
and the latest version of OS; for the design development, the proponents used
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheet), and
JavaScript that is converted to Android Application using Apache Cordova so as
it can be used on different smartphone and tablet devices. The proponents will
suggest and think of the desired design and with appropriate outcomes.
DEVELOPMENT PHASE
In this phase where the researcher considered the software and hardware
requirements for the development and improvement of the system. To prove
that the application worked properly, the researcher did the testing phase and
double-checked the function of each feature of the application. The application
had met the standard expectation of the users until the application had been
distributed to the users. To maintain longer, the users must have the
responsibility to take good care of their cellular devices. This phase is where the
actual coding began.
TESTING PHASE
12
SOUTHERN MINDANAO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, INC.
National Highway, Brgy. Buenaflor
Tacurong City
In this phase, the proponents welcomed the organization and different
regarded individuals to test the viability of the application. In this stage test too
the standard or the quality of the application.
REQUIREMENT DOCUMENTATION
Requirement Documentation contains the requirements need for SMIT
Student Handbook apps. These requirements have been some bases,
containing the SMIT Student handbook apps.
GOALS
This project study is all about converting a handbook into an android
application which is the researchers’ solution in preserving the handbook in a
way that it will not be torn easily and protect it from water during the rainy
season. An android based handbook is accessible anytime and will be installed
on android devices.
FUNCTION
The researchers made this application for the old and new students of the
Institution and even for the personnel and visitors. The design of the application
is to assure that is more reliable, faster, and helpful for the students of Southern
Mindanao Institute of Technology (SMIT). It allows to get this app there is a
relative, brother, father, mother, sister, etc. Where working or studying in SMIT.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
System requirements are abroad and also the narrow detailed statement
that the proponents make a Mobile application “SMIT STUDENT HANDBOOK
APPS” to achieve the requirements.
FRONT END
-The front end is the system architecture for a user. The front end is where
the user inputs their data and then processing it for the completion of the
request made by the user. In this study. Web applications are software
applications that carry on correspondingly to native mobile applications and
work on mobile devices. However, there are critical differences between native
applications and web applications. For beginners, web applications use
browsers to run, and they are generally written in CSS, HTML5, or JavaScript.
Such apps redirect the client to the URL and afterward offer them the choice to
introduce the application. As a result, web applications enforce clients to make a
bookmark on such a page for future viewing.
