Module 7
Target

In the previous lessons, the term contemporary art refers to art—namely,

painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and video art—that is
being produced today by the young and budding artists like you. Though it may
sound simple, but the details surrounding the definition of contemporary art are
often a bit vague, as different individuals’ interpretations may widely and wildly vary.
But how do we know if a piece of art belongs to classical art, modern art or
contemporary art, the exact starting point of the contemporary art genre is still
debated; however, many art historians consider the late 1960s or early 1970s (the
end of modern art, or modernism) to be an adequate estimate.
Contemporary art is essentially any type of modern art that is post World War
II. However, there are different types of contemporary art that make this artistic genre
fascinating. When making your own contemporary artwork, you're able to experiment
with brushstrokes, color and feeling. Knowing how to create contemporary art isn't
time-consuming or expensive. It's also an enjoyable hobby that provides you with
original pieces of art to give as gifts, decorate your home with or sell.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

practices in their locality. CAR11/12AP- 0f -h-14.

Before going on, proceed to the next page and accomplish the pre-test

Activity 1: Read Me! Understand Me!

Directions: Read the definition of Art, recognize the difference between the Good
and the Bad Art. Realize to whom art is intended to. Understand what you are
reading.
What techniques are used to make contemporary artwork?

Contemporary art is often looked at with a skeptical eye. The truth about
contemporary art is that it uses techniques that most people aren’t quite used to,
causing that doubt to come into play. However, these techniques are actually quite
difficult and all deserve our credit. It’s an incredible feat to create a piece of
contemporary art, especially using these techniques. They challenge the mind and
offer unique perspectives in a way that art has never been able to do before. For that
reason, they’re some of the most valuable techniques that a person can experience
through artwork. Here are three techniques that are among the most relevant in
contemporary art today.

1. Minimalism

One of the artistic movements that has been most relevant throughout the
contemporary art movement is minimalism. Minimalism seeks to take away what’s
unnecessary and leaving only what’s essential. Minimalism is incredibly difficult and
has even made its way into being a huge part of branding and design for companies
all over the world. This is probably the most important part of contemporary art, as
it has informed so much of society. Have you noticed that branding has gotten more
minimalist over the past ten years or so? You can thank the contemporary art
movement for doing that.

2. Found Objects
Taking something that people view as useless, and then using it in a unique
way in order to make artwork is one of the most important movements that currently
exist in contemporary artwork. The idea is that things that we often view as junk are
actually more valuable than we think that they are. Everything you find can be used
to tell a story, or to create new diverse perspectives that we’re looking for when we
attend an art exhibitions. The found objects movement is one of the most important
movements in all of contemporary art currently.

3. Large-Scale Art
Creating an incredibly huge masterpiece to express diverse perspectives in
artwork is incredibly popular, even today. Over the past forty years, large scale art,
and art that includes the environment has come into its own as one of the most
important movements within contemporary art. That’s why you often see modern art
pieces alongside buildings, or as huge structures out in the open.

by sculptor Leeroy New.

4
Contemporary Artwork Relies on Certain Techniques
With every new age of art, there are new unique techniques that define how
the movement develops. For contemporary art, among many techniques, you can
find techniques such as minimalism, found objects, and large scale paintings. Each
of these bring their own unique perspective into the artistic community, and each
is valued as a pick for a technique that is most influential in contemporary art.
Look out for these when you’re out at an exhibition next, you’ll find that they’re
much more relevant than you perhaps think that they are.

What are the famous arts and crafts in Region 1

The traditional arts and handicrafts, like the “inabel” fabrics and “burnal”
jars are folk arts that continue to tell its tales for many hundred years now. They
are not only relevant to the northern region but also to the development of arts and
culture of the Philippines. Today, these traditional arts and handicraft were given a
twist to fit the taste of local consumers and the artists themselves. Though Ilocos
region is famous with traditional arts, in this module we will only feature the most
popular ones where materials can be found in your locality.

1. Binatbatan - beating of cotton balls using a bamboo sticks to separate the seeds.
"Binatbatan Festival traces its roots from the abel weaving industry of Vigan.
Binatbatan comes from the word batbat, a pair of bamboo stick used to separate
cotton pods that come from a tall tree called kapas sanglay. The word "kapas" from
kapas sanglay means "cotton" in Ilocano.

2. Abel Fabric - special fabric made of cotton by doing binatbatan. Abel is Ilocano
for “weave,” and inabel literally means “woven.” You can interpret inabel as
pertaining to any kind of woven fabric, but it is mostly used to refer to that distinctly
Ilocano textile of plain or patterned woven cotton made in hardwood looms using
techniques passed down through generations.

6
3. Bamboo Crafts. Ingenious locally-made bamboo products such as baskets and
novelty items are attractive to tourists and visitors would further boost Bessang Pass,
poised to be an eco-tourism hub in the Ilocos Region.

4. Burnay Pottery. This earthenware is called burnay. The craft of making

earthenware using the grade A clay that was found in plenty in the
Western area of Vigan. The making of burnay is done with just the use of
the potter’s skillful hands and use of pottery wheel and kiln. Fine sand is
used to temper the clay, which once fashioned into the desired shape is
placed inside high-temperature ground kilns made from brick and clay.
Compared to terracotta, people say that the burnay is hardier.

7
5. Stone Art. Bahay na Bato is an iconic house with collection of stone arts and
figurines made from pebble stones. The house itself is made up of stones
and pebbles. The rock and stone artworks and the Bahay na Bato house
is the creation of Korean artist Vong Kim.

6. Seashell Craft. Shells and corals from the seashore as raw materials for trinkets
which can be done at home or at the backyard. It can also be used as
decorative ornaments in flower vases, jars, photo frames, bags and many
more.
