Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Form 2

Observation Date: 4/25/22 Observation Time: 9:23 AM

Teacher Observed: Ms. Santiago Subject/Grade Level: Mathematics/ 6th Grade

School Observed: SST-Spring Observer: Zeynep Karakoc

STUDENT BEHAVIOR (MAJORITY OF STUDENTS):

_X_ On Task ___ Off Task ___ Engaged ____ Learning Successfully

Explain: Other than 4 students out of 28 were on task, listening carefully and taking notes on

their textbooks.

TEACHER STRATEGIES OBSERVED:

_X_ Modeling __ Question/Answer _X_ Lecture __ Monitoring Groups

__ Listening _X_ Problem-Solving _X_ Evaluating ___ Reading To

Students

_X_ Modifying __ Integrating Content __Guiding Cooperative Groups

Explain: The lesson was mostly teacher centered, teacher made most of the talk. But she also

made some modifications for her ESL and SPED kids, for example she was using body language

and visuals for ESL and easier questions for SPED population in the classroom.
TEACHING MATERIALS BEING USED:

___ Manipulatives ____ Workbooks _X_ Overhead Projector __ Smart Board

___ Chalkboard ____ Maps _X_ Computer _X_ Projector

__X_ Books ____ Other Audiovisuals __ None

Explain: The teacher didn’t use any manipulatives. She projected the related pages of the

textbook and taught on them. She was also using doc camera for student examples. Instead of

workbook, students were given worksheet as a homework. Guided and independent practices

were on student textbook.

TYPE OF STUDENT GROUPING:

_X__ Small Groups ___X__ Whole Group _____ Pairs _____ Individuals

Explain: The instruction started with whole group then they worked in groups for guided and

independent practices. In each there was at least one high achiever helping others. The teacher

also had her small group and went over the parts that the students didn’t understand.

TYPE OF STUDENT ACTIVITY:

_X_ Worksheet ___ Listening _____ Writing ___ Reading _____ Performing

___ Journaling __X_ Discussing ___ Centers __X_ Homework

___ Research ___ Investigation ___ Laboratory __X_ Using Technology

Explain: The whole group instruction started with a bell work, after they finished the whole

group instruction students completed their guided and independent practices on their textbooks in

groups. The early finishers worked on the assignment on an online app called ALEKS. The

lesson was completed with an exit ticket.

MANAGEMENT/DISCIPLINE:

__X_ Stated Expectations for Behavior _X_ Positive Reinforcement

__X_ Redirection of Inappropriate Behavior _X__ Encouragement of Students

___ Self-disciplined Students ___ Effective Time Management

__X_ Materials Ready __X_ Enthusiasm for Teaching/Learning

Explain: Behavior expectations were clear and posted on the wall. When there was an

inappropriate behavior, teacher followed the discipline steps which are verbal warning, written

warning (including parent contact) – these were the ones that I observed. Students were aware of

the expectations. They knew where to find the worksheet or supplies and also where to turn the

done work in. It was a smooth management.

OVERALL COMMENTS AND REFLECTIONS:

I can call this lesson was successful, but I believe students should have had more voice and input

during the instruction to keep them more motivated and engaged. Other than that the teacher was

amazingly eager to teach and her knowledge of content was rock-solid. She was aware of the

possible misunderstandings. In Texas, students are taking STAAR test end of every academic

year. This test is an online test since last year. Regarding this, it would be better to provide

online practices more than paper work.
