Case Study 1 : Answers

1. Earlier to 1990, the focus of business thought was more on selling goods to customers than

on customer satisfaction. As the company's processes evolved, it became much more.

Standards, efficiency, quality, marketing, and several other issues became part of business

thinking.

when companies started to think some form of management approach aiming at

improvements by means of elevating efficiency and effectiveness of the process that exists

within and across an organization, they came up with some solutions to gain a control over

other competitors. This practice leads to a kind of business management strategy called

Business process re-engineering (BPR). BPR aimed to help organizations fundamentally

rethink how they do their work in order to improve customer service, cut operational costs,

and become world-class competitors.

More business processes arose as competition intensified, necessitating the selection of a

superior process for certain organizations. Due to the strong competitions occurred between

companies the business thinking of most companies has evolved into a series of interlinked

technologies that will bring an ideal business process with optimal period. These sets of

technologies enabled companies to react quickly for the everchanging Global market

conditions. Such kinds of technological products and services are commonly known as

business process management. (BPM). Beginning from that period, Business thinking has

evolved from focusing on specific items to customer service and needs.

2. BPM enables organizations to align business functions with customer needs, and helps

executives determine how to deploy, monitor, and measure company resources. When

properly executed, BPM can enhance efficiency and productivity, reduce costs, and

minimize errors and risk – thereby optimizing results. Implementing best practices in BPM

will also contributes to the following points.

 It helps businesses to be more Cost effective.

 BPM will help companies to minimize errors.

 Competitive advantages.

 Increase Return on investment for companies.

 Help businesses to change processes more quickly.

 It helps to align IT infrastructures more closely with business needs.

 It paves way for outsourcing of entire business operations.

 It simplifies overall business activities.

 It helps organizations collaborate by aligning their business processes more

closely.

3. Process improvement involves the business practice of identifying, analyzing, and

improving existing business processes to optimize performance, meet best practice

standards or simply improve quality and the user experience for customers and end-users.

When all new information systems and management initiatives are mainly driven by

process improvements, concepts like BPM will have undeniable roles for the development

of the business as well as for customer satisfactions.

As we all know when a process is remodeled most probably will have a significant

advantage than the previous process. So, when all information systems are giving emphasis

on this remodeled or improved process using Business process management it will be more

effective, generates immediate cost savings and provide a competitive advantage.

In the article, a particular example of MSB international is used to discuss how BPM has

transformed the company after the process improvement. BPM revamp the contract

processes of the company by decreases the total time per contract from one hour to five

minutes. This means BPM helped MSB company’s salesperson to decrease the time

consumption per contract by 12 folds. In addition, after using the BPM model of process

improvement, the company generated around 2 folds of revenue when compared to the

software cost. This clearly implies that when all new information systems are solely driven

by process improvement, BPM will have valuable role.
