IDENTIFYING RHYMING WORDS LESSON PLAN

I. Describe the Class

• The kindergarten class has 19 kids. There are 3 learning disabled students.

II. Subject/Skill:

• Rhyming words: identifying 2 words that sound alike.

III. Objective(s)

• The student should be able to identify 2 words that sound alike based on the list
on the projector screen and demonstrate what part of the words prove that they
rhyme.

IV. Procedures

1. State the objective and orient student to the lesson: Read aloud all the words
on the projector. Sound each of them out.
2. Review Prerequisites: Student should already know how to pronounce specific
site words. They should understand the vowel sounds. Student should understand
what a rhyming word means.
3. Modeling: When I say 1 word followed by another word, the student will explain
if that 2nd word is a rhyming word with the 1st or not. If it is, they will then reply
with what part of the word makes them rhyme. If it is not, they will find one in the
list that does rhyme with the first word I said.
4. Conducting Learning Probes/Guided Practice: After I have demonstrated a
few, a student will come up and do what I did. He/She will pick 2 words and have
another student explain if it is rhyming or not. Students can also break into groups
of 3 or 4 and repeat the same steps.
5. Independent student practice: At the end of the weak I will test each student
one-on-one to see if they can identify 2 rhyming words in a list of multiple words.
If the student still doesn’t understand I will work with them one-on-one or pair
them up with another student who does understand.

V. Materials

• Materials needed for this lesson are a projector screen, projector, either laser
pointer or stick pointer. The lights will be dimmed in the classroom.

VI. Grouping Structures

• Everyone sitting on the carpet together facing the front of the class. When class
splits into groups of 3 or 4 they can scatter throughout the room.

VII. Modifications

• We will start as a whole class. When the class breaks into groups, I will have the
leaning disabled students work with a teacher assistant, or use a Chromebook with
special programs to assist with the lesson.

VIII. Assessment

6. Assessing student progress/culminating or closing activity: By the end of the

lesson, students should be able to easily sound out and identify rhyming words.
They will be able to write stories or poems using the rhyming words they have
learned. They will understand the concept of a rhyming word and what makes it
rhyme. At the end of the lesson week, I will give the students a written quiz where
they will match the rhyming words.
7. Distributed Practice and Review: Throughout the week, I will send worksheets
home where they will color the objects that rhyme, match the words that rhyme,
and write words that rhyme. I will do activities throughout the week in the
classroom where they will identify and name objects in the room that rhyme and
explain why by sounding them out. In the weeks to follow, I will randomly
present the class with a word and ask for a word that rhymes with it, without
giving them options to choose.
