Why Are Engineers Considered An Important Segment of The Society?

Engineers are considered important to society as they apply their knowledge and skills across many industries like agriculture, infrastructure, technology, education, and healthcare [1]. Their work developing machinery has increased food production efficiency in agriculture and improved infrastructure and medical technology [1,2]. Current concerns requiring engineering outputs include addressing issues related to the growing population like increasing food production through agriculture and reducing pollution through renewable energy and improved transportation/facilities in rural areas [2]. To be a successful engineer manager requires having vision and leadership skills to motivate teams, communicating effectively, making flexible decisions and taking responsibility, and earning respect through strong technical skills [3].

1. Why are engineers considered an important segment of the society?

Today, engineers are important in the in the field of agriculture, infrastructures,

technology, education and in health sectors. They use the knowledge they have within a specific
industry in order to make things work and solve problems, whether this be with transportation,
medicine, education and environment. Engineers are essential to the process of researching and
developing new products.
First, agriculture has a strong link with engineering. Engineers develop machineries that
people used in the modern day which results in the increased and efficiency of the production of
food. Before, I have observed that the common farming is manual but now it is a rare event to
find a situation where machinery or other technology is not being used on the farms. Also,
engineers develop good irrigation system for farms.
On the other hand, healthcare is another important field also to consider especially in
this current situation where in we are facing a pandemic. The equipment used in hospitals
certainly wouldn’t exist without the engineers and engineering who created it. The facilities and
hospitals wouldn’t exist without engineers who build it. The improvement of medical technology
has helped to save and improve the lives of many people.
Without engineers there is no development in the transportation system.
Engineers make sure that all the goods, equipment and systems we are using are not
only manufactured reliably, but can be used safely by us consumers.
Engineers are important in today’s world due to the vast and rapid industrialization that
we see on our environment. Engineer’s support many “life functions”. As the world population
increases, humans need to be transported, fed and etc.
2. In what current concerns are engineering outputs needed?

Due to the vast growing of population, diseases, lacking of food supply, climate change and etc. are
becoming rampant. And engineering outputs are needed to at least help and reduce some
environmental problems.

Current concerns that needed engineering outputs are agriculture. Especially to the vast growing of
population, food production needs to be more develop to supply the needs of people. Elimination of
pollution such as water, air and land needed to be reduce as engineering outputs will help. Providing
renewable energy to at least lessen the pollution and climate change.

In far rural areas, engineering outputs are needed, like good transportation, roads and renewable B
energy. It is also needed in the health sector especially this pandemic as it will provide and improve new
efficient facilities and high technology equipment.

3. How may one become a successful engineer manager?

First, engineer managers should have a vision of what end results and success of their projects
would look like. They should have the ability to lead a team. Having a strong sense of purpose
enables engineer managers to evoke confidence and motivate their team, providing them with
direction while inspiring, empowering and trusting them to their jobs.
He should remain flexible when making decisions, as different situations may require unique
approaches. Since managers are making the decisions, they are responsible for the results.
Managers should be honest about their mistakes and poor decisions and take them as
opportunities for learning and changing course. Learning how to assess situations that don’t
have clear right or wrong answers is a key that effective engineer manager need to acquire.
Engineer manager not only lead teams of people, but they also interact with individuals with
varying levels of technical expertise. They need to be able to communicate effectively. In short
an engineer manager has an excellent communication skill. A good engineer manager
understands the needs of both sides and how to maintain the balance between them. This
means keeping the team on task and within budgets and deadlines.
Based from observation and research, engineer managers with strong technical skills tend to
earn more respect from their teams
