This document summarizes an experiment using MATLAB Simulink to analyze symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in a power system transmission line. The experiment objectives are to determine balanced and unbalanced fault types and perform fault analysis. Symmetrical faults involve three lines shorting to ground, while unsymmetrical faults include single line to ground, line to line, and double line to ground situations. The experiment models a system in Simulink and obtains voltage and current measurements for different fault locations and types. The results demonstrate how to identify and analyze faults using Simulink simulations.

Experiment Name:
Symmetrical and Unsymmetrical faults Analysis Using MATLAB Simulink Software.
Obejectives:
i) To determine the fault types those are balanced and unbalanced faults of the transmission line
in the power system.
ii) To perform the symmetrical and unsymmetrical fault analysis and obtain the results from
simulation on those types of fault using MATLAB Simulink.

Theory:
Power system fault analysis is the process of determining the bus voltages and line currents
during the occurrence of various types of faults in transmission lines. Faults on power systems
can be divided into three-phase balanced and unbalanced faults. Balanced faults occurrence is
happened when three lines are shorted with ground. Unbalanced faults occurrence on power
system transmission lines are single line to ground faults, line to line faults and double line to
ground faults. And this two types of faults are also called symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults.

The line fault model developed in Simulink is shown in fig.01. The line fault model consists of
11 kV, 30 MVA, 50 Hz three-phase source block feeding through 11 kV/0.4 kV, 1 MVA
delta/wye transformers to a 10 kW resistive and 100 VAR inductive load. There are
instantaneous waveform and measurement scopes located at 11 kV and 0.4 kV buses. There is
fault block located at the 11 kV bus to simulate line fault.A 0.4 second simulation time is set.

Required Apparatus:
The required software for this experiment is installled MATLAB/Simulink Software.

Result:
From the experiment, we came to know that how to determine the fault types those are balanced
and unbalanced faults of the transmission line in the power system and to perform the
symmetrical and unsymmetrical fault analysis and obtain the results from simulation on those
types of fault using MATLAB Simulink. The output of symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults
are shown in figure below.

Conclusion:
The simulation and analysis of three phase fault to achieve results of the transmission line
parameter is convenient by using MATLAB/Simulink software. In this simulation of three
phase transmission line fault analysis system is proposed. Three-phase line shorted with ground,
double line shorted with ground fault etc in transmission line is also simulated. This system
opens the way to redesign the bus system of the power system according to its results. This
Experiment is verified according to the figure of the result sections.
Discussion:
18

A MATLAB/Simulink based simulation study of the various types of symmetrical and

unsymmetrical faults occurring in the transmission line is carried out.In this Experiment RL
load of 10 kw and 100 Var.The Symmetrical fault is more dangerous than unsymmetrical fault.
The circuit breaker is used to add and remove the effect of fault in the healthy system. The
effect of various types of faults like three phase fault, single line to ground fault, line to line
fault and double line to ground faults on the voltage and current waveforms on the load side
during the fault and post fault conditions has been simulated. This simulation study helps in
verifying theoretical aspects.

Precautions:
i) All the components were connected properly.
ii) Primary and Secondary voltage value was placed properly according to the given system.
iii)The powergui tool was used before running the program.
iii) Symmetrical and Unsymmetrical faults were selected carefully from fault tool.
iv) Scope was connected properly with the VI measurement unit and output was taken carefully
from it.
