ASSESSMENT IN STUDENT LEARNING 1

PROF 7
ACTIVITY 1

Based on the lessons on the basic concepts and principles in assessment in learning,
select five core principles in assessing learning and explain them in relation to your experience
with a previous or current teacher in one of your courses/subjects.

ASSESSMENT ILLUSTRATION OF PRACTICE

Assessment is on-going, continuous, and During our discussion in one of our course
formative process subject, our teacher asked us on our insight and
perspective regarding the importance of
assessment in the teaching-learning process. As
we discussed the topic, specific thoughts and
aspects were highlighted, prompting us to think
and grasp in a constant and spontaneous
manner. By that kind of assessment, it arouses
engagement and our learning increases as it was
simple, the construction of idea is concrete, and
our individual preferences and strength are
naturally linked to deal with our learning.

Assessment is both process and product- On one of the activity that was assigned to my
oriented group by our teacher is to report a specific topic
and that includes making of instructional
materials. Before presenting the assigned topic,
she provide us an opportunity for our materials
to be checked. She gave us feedback on the weak
areas of our chosen instructional materials as
well as indicate its strength. After presenting the
assigned topic, she assessed our performance not
just based on the actual task performance but as
well as the materials, the style and technique
used, and our individual competency.

Assessment is learner-centered On one of our discussion in our subject ‘Teaching

Science in the Elementary Grades’ we were asked
by our teacher on what is our interpretation of
the illustration. As we answered and give our
concept of the illustration, I realized that she’s
assessing our understanding based on our
formed and constructed meaning of learning as
well as to monitor our progress and examine our
performance.
Assessment is not an end itself During our demonstration teaching in one of our
course subject, our professor assessed our
performance based on the set standard of COT
(Classroom Observation Tool). The points given to
us was a reflection of our knowledge, and the

application of our skills. The assessment of our
Demo teaching is essentially aimed at measuring
our expertise and evaluating our level of know-
how, including providing comments and feedback
on the applied knowledge. The assessment score
is manageable on our part as gives us a clear
picture of our ability in the teaching-learning
process. The score allows us strive for
improvement and growth as learning didn’t stop
in one point.

Assessment should have a clear purpose In our LET Review 1 class, our professor gave us a
list of 50 questions regarding Professional
Education that we had to answer in an hour. Our
professor's purpose and goal during that test is to
see how well we manage our time and how well
we respond under pressure as we tend to be
stacked at one question for a couple of minutes,
taking up our time in answering because we're
having trouble coping with ProfEd questions. This
type of assessment prepares us and hones our
ability to apply understanding and expertise
while staying inside the time restriction.
