Burning & Cutting
What is Plasma?
Plasma - The fourth state of matter following solid, liquid, and gas. Plasma is an ionized
(electrified) form of gas. In plasma cutting, a gas such as Nitrogen is sent under
pressure through the torch where it begins to swirl and is forced out a small orifice
at which point it passes through an electric arc and the gas is ionized. The electricity
“excites” the electrons of the gas atoms. It results in a very quick, clean cut and imparts
little heat into the base metal. Plasma is one step down from a laser.
File Requirements
All computer files for the LTEC Gas and Plasma Cutting Machine must be in either
a .dxf or .cad file format. Our machine shop can convert some JPEG and Adobe
Photoshop files to .dxf for an additional charge. Files may be submitted via email to
[email protected] or on a CD, floppy disk, or USB memory stick.

Welding
TIG Welding
TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas welding. Also called GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc
Welding) and Heliarc® which was Linde’s trade name for the TIG process when it
was introduced many years ago. The arc is started with a tungsten electrode shielded
by inert gas and filler rod is fed into the weld puddle separately. A slower process than
MIG, it produces a more precise weld and can be used at lower amperages for thinner
metal and can be used on exotic metals.
MIG Welding
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is frequently referred to as MIG welding. MIG
welding is a commonly used high deposition rate welding process. Wire is
continuously fed from a spool. MIG welding is therefore referred to as a semiautomatic
welding process. The shielding gas forms the arc plasma, stabilizes the arc on the metal
being welded, shields the arc and molten weld pool, and allows smooth transfer of metal
from the weld wire to the molten weld pool. MIG Welding Benefits include all position
capability, higher deposition rates than SMAW, longer welds made without starts and
stops, and minimal post weld cleaning.

Waterjet Cutting
What is Waterjet Cutting?
Waterjet cutting is best described as
an accelerated erosion process that is
carefully controlled. For this reason,
waterjet can cut or erode through
virtually any material known, making
it one of the most versatile machines
available. The natural erosion
process involves no chemicals or
heat. Because of this, warping and
distortion typically associated with laser, plasma and oxy-fuel cutting is eliminated,
therefore minimizing the need for secondary processing.
•Materials ranging from 10” stainless steel to 0.010” acrylics can be cut by waterjet,
making it a very versatile tool. Stacking of very thin materials to increase productivity is
possible. Kerf ranges from 0.020” to 0.050”.
•Taper and edge finish are directly related to cut speed. The greater the speed, the
more taper and the coarser the edge finish. As the waterjet slows down, taper can be
eliminated and the finish of about 120 achieved.

About Structural Shapes
Carbon Steel Shapes - Bar Size and Structural
When the greatest dimension (length excluded) of a shape is less than 3 inches, it is classified as a bar size
shape. However, when at least one of its dimensions (length excluded) is greater than 3 inches, it is classified
as a structural shape.
These shapes are used for general structural purposes and for riveted, bolted or welded construction on
bridges and buildings.
These shapes can be welded by all welding processes and the results are extremely high quality welds and
joints. The design, thickness of section, service requirements, etc. are factors that determine the grade of
welding rod to be used.
“W” Shapes - Doubly-symmetric wide flange shapes used as beams or columns whose inside flange surfaces
are substantially parallel. The W-shape is the most widely used structural member for beams,
columns, and other load-bearing applications. It has parallel inner and outer flange surfaces that are of
constant thickness. This flange design provides greater cross-sectional area in the flanges, which results in
greater strength than is provided by the S-shape, which has a slope of approximately 17 degrees on the
inner flange surfaces. Includes Wide Flange Beams.
“S” Shapes - Doubly-symmetric shapes produced with inside flange surfaces with a slope of approximately
17 degress. Includes I-beams,
“M” Shapes - Doubly-symmetric shapes that cannot be classified as “W”, “S” or bearing pile shapes.
Includes Junior Beams.
“C” Shapes -The C-shape is similar to the S-shape in that its inner flange surface is also sloped
approximately17 degrees. The C-shape is especially useful in locations where a single flat surface on one
side is required. When used alone, the C-shape is not very efficient as a beam or column. However, efficient
built-up members may be constructed of charnels assembled together with other structural shapes and
connected by rivets or welds. Includes Channels.
“MC” Shapes - Channels that cannot be classified as “C” shapes. Includes Junior Channels (stair stringers),
Ship Channels and Car Channels.

Stainless Steel Selection Guide
304 / 304L - 304 Stainless Steel is a versatile general purpose steel with good
resistance to atmospheric corrosion, many organic and inorganic chemicals, and
to food and beverages. 304L has .03 maximum carbon and is used when extensive
welding is called for.
304H - A modification of Type 304, this stainless steel has a controlled carbon
content in a range of .04 to .010 for increased strength at temperatures above 800°F.
Type 304H can not be hardened by heat treatment but can be hardened through cold
working.

Identification Systems
A.I.S.I. Specifications
The most widely used system for designating carbon and alloy steels is the SAE-AISI system. As a point of
technicality, there are two separate systems, but they are nearly identical and have been carefully coordinated
by the two groups. The SAE-AISI system is applied to semi-finished forgings, hot-rolled and cold-finished
bars, wire rod and seamless tubular goods, structural shapes, plates, sheet, strip, and welded tubing.
Carbon steels contain less than 1.65% Mn, 0.60% Si, and 0.60% Cu; they comprise the lxxx groups
in the SAE-AISI system and are subdivided into four distinct series as a result of the difference in certain
fundamental properties among them.
Designations for merchant quality steels include the prefix M. A carbon steel designation with the letter B
inserted between the second and third digits indicates the steel contains 0.0005 to 0.003% B. Likewise, the
letter L inserted between the second and third digits indicates that the steel contains 0.15 to 0.35% Pb for
enhanced machinability. Resulfurized carbon steels of the 11xx group and resulfurized and rephosphorized
carbon steels of the 12xx group are produced for applications requiring good machinability. Steels that
having nominal manganese contents of between 0.9 and 1.5% but no other alloying additions now have 15xx
designations in place of the 10xx designations formerly used.
Alloy steels contain manganese, silicon, or copper in quantities greater than those listed for the carbon
steels, or they have specified ranges or minimums for one or more of the other alloying elements. In the
AISI-SAE system of designations, the major alloying elements are indicated by the first two digits of the
designation. The amount of carbon, in hundredths of a percent, is indicated by the last two (or three) digits.
For alloy steels that have specific hardenability requirements, the suffix H is used to distinguish these
steels from corresponding grades that have no hardenability requirement. As with carbon steels, the letter
B inserted between the second and third digits indicates that the steel contains boron. The prefix E signifies
that the steel was produced by the electric furnace process.
