1-a Derive the following relations

1-b The amount of air supplied to an air conditioned hall is 300m3/min. The atmospheric
conditions are 35oC DBT and 55% RH. The required conditions are 20oC DBT and 60% RH.
Find out the sensible heat and latent heat removed from the air per minute. Also, find sensible
heat factor for the system.

{5066.2kJ/min, 9465.7kJ/min, and SHF = 0.348}

2-a Write a short note on ‘by-pass factor’

2-b The following data refer to air conditioning of public hall:

- Outdoor condition = 40oC DBT, 20oC WBT.

- Required conditions = 20oC DBT, 50% RH
- Seating capacity = 1000
- Amount of outdoor air supplied = 0.3m3/min/person

If the required condition is achieved first by adiabatic humidifying and then sensible cooling
coil, find the capacity of the cooling coil and surface temperature of the coil if the by-pass
factor is 0.25, and find the capacity of the humidifier and its efficiency.

{6227kJ/min, 14oC, 20.1kg/h, and 10%}

3-a Describe briefly any two of the following processes:

(i) Sensible heating (ii) Cooling and dehumidification

(iii) Heating and humidification (iv) Heating and dehumidification

3-b) In an air conditioning system, the inside and outside condition are 25oC DBT, 50% RH
and 40oC DBT, 27oC WBT respectively. The room sensible heat factor is 0.8. 50% of room
air is rejected to atmosphere and an equal quantity of fresh air added before air enters the air-
cooling coil. If the fresh air is 100m3/min, determine:

1- Room sensible and latent loads

2- Sensible and latent heat due to fresh air
3- Apparatus dew point
4- Humidity ratio and dry bulb temperature of air entering cooling coil. Assume by-pass
factor as zero, density of air 1.2kg/m3 at pressure 1.01325bar
{53.96kW, 14.04kW, 30.67kW, 39.73kW, 11.8oC, 0.0138kg/kgD.A, and 32.5oC}

4-a) A mixture of air and water vapor at 1 bar and 25ºC has a dew point temperature of 15ºC.
Determine the relative humidity and specific humidity.

[Ans. 53.8%, 0.01078 kg/kg of dry air]

4-b Air flowing at the rate of 100m3/min at 40oC DBT and 50% RH is mixed with another
stream flowing at the rate of 20m3/min at 26oC DBT and 50% RH. The mixture flows over a
cooling coil whose apparatus dew point is 10oC and by-pass factor is 0.2. Find dry bulb
temperature and relative humidity of air leaving the coil. If this air is supplied to a room,
where 26oC DBT and 50% RH are maintained, estimate room sensible heat factor and cooling
load capacity of the coil.
{30.9oC, 0.913, 6548.8kJ/min}

5-a) The air supplied to a room of building in winter is to be at 17ºC and have a relative
humidity of 60%. If the barometric pressure is 1.01325 bar, calculate the specific humidity.
What would be the dew point under these conditions?
Ans. [0.00723 kg/kg of dry air, 9.18ºC]

5-b) Atmospheric air at 38ºC and 40 per cent relative humidity is to be cooled and
dehumidified to a state of saturated air at 10ºC. The mass rate of flow of atmospheric air
entering the dehumidifier is 45.4 kg/h. Neglecting any pressure drop, determine

(i) The mass of water removed;

(ii) The quantity of heat removed
[Ans. (i) 0.397 kg/h, (ii) 2287 kJ/h]
