1.0 INTRODUCTION
M/s Sorathia Velji Ratna & Co., has been awarded the construction of Minor Bridge at
Ch No. 19 + 730, on Holgon Mainimata Chikaliya road in Barwani District. For the structural
design of foundation they have approached M/S Rajmi Geoexploration & Engineering Pvt. Ltd.,
Indore (Consultant). It was agreed by the client and consultant (i) to drill one no. of borehole
through overburden and rock up to a maximum depth of 8.00 m depth (however the maximum
drilling carried out in BH – 1 is 8.00 m) using rotary drilling machine (ii) to collect the samples
from the borehole (iii) test the samples in the laboratory of the consultant and (iv) on the basis of
test results to recommend a safe bearing capacity. The Table – 1 shows the soil profile in the
borehole along with the test results.
2.0 COMPUTATIONS OF SAFE BEARING CAPACITY (FOR SOIL)
(I) BASED ON SHEAR CONSIDERATION

The Safe Bearing Capacity is calculated as per IS: 6403- 1981 (determination of bearing
capacity of shallow foundations). For local and general shear failure the net safe bearing capacity
is given as follows:
Qns = [C Nc Sc dc ic+q (Nq-1) Sq dq iq+ ½ B γ Nγ dγ iγ W]/F (In case of General shear failure)
Qns = [2/3 C N’c S c dc ic+q (N’q-1) Sq dq iq+ ½ B γ N’γ Sγdγ iγ W]/F (In case of local shear
failure)
Where qns = Net Safe Bearing Capacity
C = Cohesion (for Non cohesive material C = 0)
Ǿ = Angle of internal friction
Ǿ’ = tan-1(0.67 tan (Ø)) for local shear failure
γ = Average density of over burden
Nc,Nq,Nγ = Bearing Capacity factors for General Shear Failure
N’c,N’q,N’γ = Bearing Capacity factors for Local Shear Failure
Sc,Sq,Sγ = Shape factors
dc ,dq ,dγ = depth factors
ic ,iq ,iγ = inclination factors ( 1 in the case of vertical loads)
q = Effective surcharge at depth of” D” below ground level.

B = Width of footing in m.
F = Factor of safety

2.1 (FOR ROCK)

According to the Indian Standard Code (IS: 12070 -1987 reaffirmed in 2005) the safe bearing
capacity of the rock can be obtained by any of the following methods
 By Rock Mass rating
 By Core Strength
 By Pressure meter
 By conducting plate load test
It has been shown that the choice of the method depend upon the quality of the rock. For the
good rock quality with wide (1m to 3m) or very wide (>3m) spacing of discontinuity RMR
criteria should be adopted. Rock mass with closed discontinuity at moderately close (0.3 to 1m)
spacing the criteria of core strength should be adopted.
In our case we have adopted RMR criteria.

5.1 Rock Mass Rating:-

For computation of bearing capacity of rock formation the geological observations for
joints faults, shear zone etc are important. The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) Value is obtained
based upon many factors as follows

(i) Strength of Rock: - The RMR value depends upon the Unconfined Compressive
Strength (UCS) of the rock. Depending upon the value of Strength of rock core the rating points
from 0 to 15 are awarded. Table shows the RMR increment for UCS values as follows

Report No: - 2019-20/90

Unconfined Compressive Strength (MPa) RMR Increment

> 200 15
100 – 200 12 * Do not use
50 – 100 7 this rock
25 – 50 4
10 – 25 2*
3 – 10 18
<3 0*

(ii) Drill Core Quality: - The drill quality is related to the Rock Quality Designation (RQD).
Depending upon RQD value the rock is given rating points ranging from 3 to 20 is awarded.
Table shows the RMR increment for UCS values as follows;
RQD (%) 91 – 100 76 – 90 51 – 75 25 – 50 <25
Rating Increment 20 17 13 8 3

(iii) Joint Spacing: - The RMR value depends upon the spacing of joints. The rating
increment should reflect the joint set which is the most critical for a particular application. If the
rock mass has fewer sets of joints, the rating is increased. Depending upon the spacing of joints
the rock is given rating points ranging from 5 to 30 is awarded. Table shows the RMR increment
for UCS values as follows’

Joint Spacing (m) >2 0.6 - 2 0.2 – 0.6 0.006 – 0.2 < 0.006
Rating Increment 20 15 10 8 5

(iv) Joint Characteristics: - The condition of the joint sets most likely to influence a
particular application should be considered for the rating. The increment of RMR for joint
characteristics depends upon the roughness of the joint. Based upon the joint conditions such as
very rough surface smooth surface etc. rock is given rating points from 0 to 25. Table shows the
RMR increment for UCS values as follows.

Separation <1mm
Slicken sided wall rock surface or 1-5mm thick gauge or 1-5mm wide opening, 10
continuous discontinuity
5mm thick soft gauge 5mm wide continuous discontinuity 0

(v) Ground water conditions: - Ground water condition can influence the rock mass
behavior to a large extent. The RMR value depends upon the general condition of the rock,
which, in turn, depends upon the ground water. Depending upon the ground water condition the
rock is given rating points ranging from 1 to 10 are given. Table shows the RMR increment for
UCS values as follows;
General Condition Inflow per 10 m Joint water Rating
tunnel length pressure divide Increment
(lit/min) by major
principal stress
Completely dry None 0 15
Damp <10 0 – 0.1 10
Wet 10 – 25 0.1 – 0.2 7
Dripping 25 – 125 0.2 – 0.5 4
Flowing >125 >0.5 0

Based upon the RMR value (obtained by adding the rating points of the entire five criterion as
above the rock classified as very poor (RMR 0- 20), poor (RMR 21-40), fair (RMR 41-60), good
(RMR 61-80 and very good (RMR 81-100). As per IS 12070 the Safe Bearing Capacity can be
obtained based upon rock classification.

3.0 CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION

The drilling of a one borehole for the Geotechnical Investigation for the proposed Minor Bridge
at Ch 19 + 730 , on Holgon Mainimata Chikaliya road, district Barwani has been done. Based
upon the soil/rock profile, following are the recommendations;
 For the structures to be constructed near BH – 1Individual Isolated footings may be
provided for the transfer of loads of structure. The Safe Bearing Capacity at 2.00 m is
recommended as 400 kPa.

 Consolidated results along with the level of foundation, SBC and type of rock at
Foundation level are reproduced in Table A
 The minimum recommended depth should be checked against the scouring of the
material as per IRC 78.
