other applications. A smartphone may be thought of as a handheld computer integrated within a
mobile telephone (Hosch, 2020). The current day modern smartphones have changed a lot along the
way in many different ways. What was once large, bulky and was considered a luxury product, has
now become small, compact, and aesthetically pleasing by design. It is by far one of the most
essential commodities in our urban life that we cannot live without, and its evolution has taken the
economic market by storm. In fact, it is estimated that the number of smartphone users in India
would reach over 760 million in 2021 (Department, 2021). The history and evolution of the
smartphone is important to understand because it gives us a bird’s eye view of our humble journey
from the 1940s. 1.1 History of Smartphone The many benefits of telecommunication technology has
aided the birth of the first smartphone in 2007. The chronology of timeline of the first
comprehensive smartphones began in January 2007 when the iPhone was introduced for the first
time by Apple. There were many predecessors to the iPhone prior to this however, iPhone is seen as
the first smartphone as it presented itself as an all-encompassing personal device which could cater
to the personal and official needs of the user. Arthur (Arthur, 2012), in his article ‘The History of
Smartphones: TimeLine’ has elicited the same. Kim (Kim, 2011), in his journal paper titled ‘The Apple
iPhone Shock in Korea’ has more accurately divided the history of the smartphone into two main
eras: (1) pre-iPhone and (2) post-iPhone. 2 Let us briefly look into the evolution of communication
from landline to smartphones.
• 1905 – Strowger – 1 st phone with ability to dial out rather than going through an operator
• 1980 – TEG Telecar CD – Introduction of first mobile phone (with battery attached)
• 1983 – Motorola DynaTAC – One of the first Cell phone introduced in brick form
• 2002 – Sony Ericsson T68i – First cell phone with colour screen
