Sulfuric Acid - Absorber

1. Sulfuric acid is produced by absorbing SO3 from converter gas in a mixture of H2SO4 and water in an absorber. Pure water cannot be used because it will boil. 2. The products from the absorber can be 100% H2SO4, <100% H2SO4, or >100% H2SO4 (oleum). 3. Given 10 moles of SO3 and using 80% H2SO4, the weights of 98%, 100%, and 105% H2SO4 products are calculated to be 1888.89g, 1700g, and 1360g respectively using material balances.

Sulfuric Acid – The Absorber

ABSORBER
Converter Gas: SO2, SO3, O2, N2

Absorbing medium: Mixture of H2SO4 and water – Pure water

cannot be effective because it will boil with SO2 and only fumes of
the acid will be formed due to greater pressure water than SO3.

Reaction: SO3 + H2O → H2SO4 ∆H = -31143 cal/mol

Negligible side reactions: SO2 + ½O2 → SO3

SO2 + H2O → H2SO3
ABSORBER

Absorber Gas: SO2, O2, N2

Product: 1. 100% H2SO4 (equivalent amount of SO3 & H2O)
2. <100% H2SO4 (greater H2O than SO3)
3. >100% H2SO4 (less H2O than SO3) – Oleum (H2SO4·SO3)
