BASIC TECHNOLOGY JSS1
THIRD TERM SCHEME OF WORK
1. Revision / Woodwork hand tools. 2. Woodwork hand tools (contd.) and Metalwork hand tools. 3. Metalwork hand tools (contd.). 4. Unified test 5. Maintenance of tools and machines. 6. Mid-term 7. Basic electricity. 8. Measuring instrument. 9. Simple electrical circuit and calculation. WOODWORK HAND TOOLS. The wood work hand tools are classified according to the function they performed. There are six classes of wood work hand tools. They are: 1. The measuring tools 2. The marking-out tools 3. The driving and impelling tools 4. The boring tools` 5. The work holding devices 6. The cutting tools Measuring Tools The measuring tools are used to determine the lengths and widths of wood in the workshop. They are used for testing and setting tools. Examples of measuring tools are: i. Pocket rule: The pocket rule is use to measure between two points. ii. Protractor: This is used to measure angles in degree. iii. Inside caliper: This is used for measuring internal dimensions [hollow] of an object within their capacity. iv. Outside caliper: This is used to measure external dimensions of an object within their capacity. v. Vernier caliper: This is used for measuring both the internal and external dimension of an object within their capacity. vi. Divider: This is a two legged steel instrument used for scribing arcs, curves and for transferring distances or dimensions. Measuring Tools Marking-out Tools The marking –out tools are the hand tools used for marking out the shapes of a particular wood before cutting the wood in the workshop. Examples of marking-out tools are: 1. Marking gauge : It is used for marking lengths or for marking specific lines along and across the grains of the wood. 2. Sliding square: This is used for marking-out and testing lines at right angles . It has spirit level used for testing horizontal or vertical surface of the wood. 3. Try square: This is used for testing the squareness of edges . 4. Sliding bevel: This is used to check angles or to mark angles in woodwork. It has the stock and the blade .The blade can be adjusted through a screw. 5. Mitre square: This is used only for testing and marking angle of 45 degrees. It has a fixed blade inclined at the angle of 45 degrees. 6. Trammels: This is used for marking large circle and curves. It has two movable steel points attached to it. Marking-out Tools

Driving Tools The driving tools are the hand tools used for striking or pushing in nails, screws and other objects into position in wood. However, the basic driving tools are hammer, screw driver and mallet. 1. Hammer: The claw hammer is used for driving and pulling out nails in the woodwork. 2. Mallet: This is a wooden hammer used mainly for striking chisel. It is used for flattening and bending thin plate over various shapes. 3. Screw driver: This is mainly used to turn wood screws either to drive them or to bring them out in the wood work. Examples ; plain screw driver, ratchet screw driver and Philips screw driver. 4. Punch: This is called nail setter. It is used to drive nail below the surface of the wood, in order to improve the appearance of the finished jobs. Philips screw driver plain screw driver
