Analysis of Integral Bridge Considering The Influence of Soil Structure Interaction

This document analyzes integral bridges, which are bridges where the deck is cast monolithically with the abutment walls, reducing costs. Analysis of integral bridges is complex as it must consider the bridge, piers, abutments, embankments, and soil-pile interaction. A parametric study is conducted by varying soil properties surrounding piles and representing the soil with nonlinear springs. The study determines soil-spring properties using Excel VBA and incorporates them into finite element analysis software using nonlinear link elements. A case study is also carried out on existing structures using pushover analysis and parametric analysis in MIDAS Civil and CSI Bridge to better understand integral bridges' seismic performance.

Conventional bridge’s components are usually separated by the joint or bearing. Integral bridge is
such bridge in which the bridge deck is cast monolithically with the abutment walls. As this bridge
does not have joints, it reduced both the first - cost and life - cycle cost of integral bridges. Integral
bridges have increased redundancy, which improves the seismic performance of bridges during
seismic event. Conventional Bridge fails due to the failure of bearing, non-availability of seating
width & failure of expansion joint. Such kind of failure can be avoided in the integral bridge.
Analysis of integral bridge is much more complex than conventional bridge as bridge deck, piers,
abutments, embankments and soil-pile interaction must be considered as a single. Parametric Study
is conducted with variation of soil properties surrounding the pile. Soil surrounding the pile is
represented by the series of non linear Spring (Lateral and vertical) p–y curve, t-z curve and q-z
curve based on API. System. For a parametric study, Nonlinear properties of soil surrounding the
pile for different parametric soil such as p-y curve, t-z and Q-z curve were determined using the
Excel VBA This soil spring were incorporated in the finite element software by using non linear
link element. For a better understanding of seismic performance of the integral bridge case study
is carried out on the existing structures, including pushover analysis, parametric analysis
conducted using FEM software MIDAS CIVIL and Csi bridge. 2D model is developed in the
MIDAS Civil and 3-D model is developed in the Csi bridge and result obtained from both types
of model were compared..It was found that axial tip bearing resistance in the pile is fully mobilized
when settlement of pile reaches the value of 10 % of pile diameter .It is found that after attaining
the depth of increasing lateral resistance, the ultimate lateral resistance of soft clay remains
constant. Therefore, the values 𝑝- 𝑦 curves for piles in soft clay after the depth of increasing
resistance remain constant. Modal Analysis (Free vibration Analysis) of 3D Integral bridge was
done, in which conclusion is made that, when stiffness of soil is reduced, then fundamental period
of vibration of bridge is increased.
