Course Code: ETME-308 Assignment Number: 02
Subject: Refrigeration and Air-conditioning
Q.1 A simple Vapor compression cycle using R12 as refrigerant having evaporator
temperature of -100C and condensing temperature of 400C. The capacity of the plant
is 150 kW .Volumetric efficiency of the compressor is 80 % and the speed of the
compressor is 720 rpm. Determine (i) Refrigerant mass flow rate in kg/min (ii)
displacement volume of compressor.
Q.2 A refrigerator using R-134a is located in a 200C room. Consider the cycle to be ideal,
except that the compressor is not reversible. Saturated vapor at -200C enters the
compressor, and the R-134a exits the compressor at 500C. The condenser temperature
is 400C. The mass flow rate of refrigerant around the cycle is 0.2 kg/s, and the
coefficient of performance is measured and found to be 2.3. Find the power input to
the compressor and the rate of entropy generation in the compressor process.
Q.3 Consider an ideal VCR refrigeration cycle that has a condenser temperature of 450C
and an evaporator temperature of -150C. Determine the coefficient of performance of
this refrigerator for the working fluids R-12 and R-22.
Q.4 A refrigerator uses refrigerant-134a as the working fluid and operates on an ideal
vapor-compression refrigeration cycle between 0.14 and 0.8 MPa. If the mass flow
rate of the refrigerant is 0.05 kg/s, determine (a) the rate of heat removal from the
refrigerated space and the power input to the compressor, (b) the rate of heat rejection
to the environment, and (c) the COP of the refrigerator.
Q.7 The operating conditions for a water-LiBr chilled water plant for air conditioning are
as follows
Generator temperature -970C
Condenser Temperature -400C
Chilled water temperature -100C
Absorber temperature -400C
Find temperature of solution entering generator assuming hot solution is cooled to the
saturation temperature at absorber temperature. Determine for one ton refrigeration
capacity the following
(i) Thermodynamic conditions at all points
(ii) COP
(iii) Mass flow rate at all sections
(iv) Energy balance of complete system.
