Circle Time Lesson Plan

Theme: Feelings and emotions

Age Range: 4-6 years

Book: Witek, J., & Roussey, C. (2014). In My Heart: A Book of Feelings. Abrams Appleseed.

Goal: Children to explore a range of emotions and understand ways they could express and

describe their own feelings.

Objectives:

1. Activity 1-Book

o Children will explore different emotions

o Children will understand how you might feel emotions physically

o Children will learn ways to describe feelings

2. Activity 2-Fingerplay song

o Children will demonstrate emotions through facial expressions

o Children will understand how you feel will affect how you react

3. Activity 3- Print Script

o Children will identify emotions based on the pictures they see

o Children will determine what things make them feel certain emotions

4. Activity 4- Individual Speaking

o Children will illustrate an experience they have had and the feelings they felt during

it

o Children will share their drawings and how that made them feel
3

o Children will understand and make connections on their experiences with feelings

Procedure:

Opening: Teacher will open the lesson by gathering the children for circle time. She will

share the book they will read is In My Heart: A Book About Feelings. Before starting to read she

will ask the children to identify the book parts. After the reading the teacher will explain that the

feelings in our heart can also be shown on our faces. The children will sing a song where they

will express some emotions with their faces and bodies.

Middle: After the finger play, children will further their knowledge of emotions by

identifying what emotions the people in a magazine might be feeling based on how they look.

Teacher will encourage students to not only focus on the people’s face expressions but also on

the whole picture, such as materials or environment, to determine what could cause certain

emotions on people. After some discussion about their predictions of the people’s feelings in the

magazines, the teacher will share a Visual Emotions Chart. Using the emotions in the chart the

teacher will ask the students to share something that made them feel that emotion. For example,

the teacher will point to the picture demonstrating “Scared” and ask the class “What is something

that made you feel scared?”, children will respond with “When a bug crawled on me”, “When I

saw a scary movie”, etc.

End: The teacher will end the lesson with an art activity which will allow the students to

illustrate a moment they have had and the feelings they felt during it. Teachers should encourage

children to express any feeling they want to talk about; it does not only have to be about a happy

feeling, happy moment, or “good’ feelings. Help students recognize their own feelings and that
