I can…identify the different parts of the digital characters and explain how they relate to
online safety with 100 % accuracy.

Pause & Think Online | Common Sense Education
1. Have students complete the coloring book about digital citizens.
2. Ask the students what they use the internet for or if they are even allowed on the
internet at home.
3. Elaborate on why it is important to be safe online.
4. Play the song, “Pause and Think Online” for the students Auditory
5. Ask students what they think it means to “pause” online

Model (How will the teacher demonstrate the skill or competence):


The teacher will present the slides (6 & 7) on the board and explain the parts of the
characters and how they relate to safety online. Visual.
● Arms: Use your arms when you're online to balance your time.
● Guts: Listen to your gut to stay safe online.
● Feet: Use your feet carefully when leaving tracks online.
● Legs: Use your legs to stand up to bullies online.
● Heart: Use your heart to be kind and respectful online.
● Head: Use your head to ask questions about what you see online.
● Head: News & Media Literacy
● Arms: Media Balance & Well-Being
● Guts: Privacy & Security
● Legs: Digital Drama, Cyberbullying & Hate Speech
● Feet: Digital Footprint & Identity

Guided Practice (List activities which will be used to guide student practice and include a
time frame for completing this practice.):
1. Students will be asked to share with their table partners which character they relate
to most online. Auditory (discussing with classmates and teacher supervision) This
should take approximately 10 minutes
2. For slides 9-13, project each slide, read aloud the question, and have students pair-
share. Students will be asked to write their responses on the board when coming
together as a whole group discussion. Read/Write Approximately 30 minutes

Independent Practice (How will students be applying this knowledge or practicing this skill
independently):
Students will be given a worksheet Grade 1 - Pause & Think Online - Pause & Think
Moment Student Handout - Google Docs to complete independently. Kinesthetic This
should take approximately 20 minutes.

Check for Understanding (Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have


learned the objectives.):
- Students have learned the digital characters
- Students have written responses on the worksheet for better understanding og
online safety .
- Students are able to listen to classmates discussion and add input
- Students are able to describe online safety using the digital characters

Closure (What method of review and evaluation will be used to complete the lesson?):
Students will be sent home with this family activity Family Activity - 1st Grade - Google
Slides. Worksheets will be collected and assessed for understanding.

Differentiation
High: Have students explore online safety deeper by creating rules using the digital
characters.
Low: Provide examples of online safety, have them draw a picture of characters with
assistance from the teacher to keep in their desk.
Special Needs: Sit at the table with the teacher for assistance. The teacher will
demonstrate online safety more thoroughly. The teacher will write the rules more clearly
and intext. Create a drawing along with the rules for the student to keep in their desk for
reference purposes.
