Band
The band was formed in 2009 by lead vocalist Tyler Joseph along with former
members. The current line-up is Joseph and drummer Josh Dun.
The band's musical style has been described as alternative hip hop, electropop, indie
pop, alternative rock, indie rock
Because their music contains a mix of many genres, the duo has been difficult to
categorize. Dun admits it's hard to place themselves in a certain genre.
Ultimately, it is difficult to categorize the band using a single genre only, since they
bridge so many of them. This has been attributed partly to the fact that both Joseph
and Dun are self-taught musicians, meaning that while producing their work they broke
many musical conventions that they were not aware of, including staying confined to a
single genre of music.
Twenty One Pilots bring a mix of piano (sometimes an electronic keyboard),
synthesizer, drums (also mixed with electronic drums some parts), vocals, and
occasionally ukulele. Their songs are poetry-based (written by Tyler and Josh), and
when his poetry is too long he stated that he needs to start rapping.
Joseph has stated that he had never intended to become a rapper, but that when
attempting to fit poetry which he had written with music, he found that rapping elements
of it was the only way for it to fit within the song.
The duo achieved breakthrough success with their fourth album, Blurryface (2015), and
became the first album in history on which every track received at least a gold
certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
The band name comes from the play 'All My Sons'.
Tyler studied the Arthur Miller classic in high school, in which a man is responsible for
the deaths of 21 pilots after he sold faulty parts that were used in their planes during
World War II. Joseph explains that the story's themes of moral dilemma and choosing
between the easy and the right decision inspired the name and formation of the band.
The “Ø” symbol (a Norwegian letter called “slashed o” or “o with a stroke”).
According to the band, their purpose for making music is "to make people think", as
well as encourage them to find joy in what they come to believe in life.
Their songs sound happy and upbeat but the words really hit home. Their music is also
one if a kind, and I love the deeper meaning behind all songs. I especially like the
metaphors in their songs. Their songs, both musically and lyrically, are fantastic. They
really want you to think; they're not just shoving words in your ear for entertainment.
