FOURTH SEMESTER B.TECH (CHEMICAL) END SEM EXAMINATION–APRIL 2021

SUBJECT: CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING-I (CML 223)
Time: 1 Hour 30 Min Max. Marks: 35
❖ Instruction to students Date: 24/04/2021
-Answer all five questions
-Missing data, if any, may be suitably assumed

Q.1 An aqueous solution of ethyl acetate is to be saponified with sodium hydroxide. The initial 04
concentration of ethyl acetate is 5 g/l and that of caustic is 0.1 normal. The values of second
order rate constant at 0oC and 20oC are k=0.235 and 0.924 (l/mol)(min)-1 respectively. The
reaction is irreversible. Calculate the time required to saponify 95% of ester at 40oC.

Q.2 Consider a liquid phase irreversible bimolecular reaction A + B ⎯⎯

k1
→ R is conducted in a PFR 3+4
along with an undesired reaction R + B ⎯⎯
k2
→ S . Derive an expression for maximum

concentration of R for (i) = 1 and (ii)  1 . Explain all the steps clearly.

Q.3 A liquid phase reaction of xylene and cyclohexene is conducted in a CSTR. The reaction is 06
carried out adiabatically and a pure stream of concentration of A is fed to the reactor at 300 K.
The standard heat of formations of xylene and cyclohexene are -40000 cal/mol and -60000
cal/mol respectively. If the specific heat capacity of xylene and cyclohexene is equal and found
to be 50 cal/mol K, determine the adiabatic equilibrium temperature and conversion of xylene in
CSTR. Assume equilibrium constant, K298= 100000.

100 kN/m2 in an exothermic equilibrium reaction:

An equimolar mixture of A and B of concentration 0.01 kmol/s is fed to the reactor and plug
flow conditions prevails within the reactor. What are the optimal isothermal temperature for
operation and the corresponding reactor volume for a final fractional conversion of 0.68? Is this
the best way of operating the reactor?

and k2 = 7.4  10 exp −125  10 RT m3/Kmol. Sec.

Q.5 An autocatalytic reaction A + ..... → B + .... is to be carried out in an isothermal continuous flow 08
reactor. The feed rate is maintained at 0.5 L/sec whereas a feed concentration of 1.5 mol/L is
used for the reaction. The rate law is given by −rA = kCACB with k = 0.002 L/mol.sec. There is

no B in the feed. For a fractional conversion of 90% calculate

(b) Volume required for a PFR

(c) Minimum volume required for PFR with recycle
