12. In our everyday life, it has been observed that when a pan full of water is boiled
on a flame, its temperature increases, but when the flame is turned off, it slowly
cools down.
This is because of the phenomenon of heat transfer taking place between the
pan full of water and the flame. It has been established that heat transfer takes
place from hotter objects to colder object.

When there are objects which are at different temperatures or there is an

object at a different temperature from the surroundings, then the transfer of
heat takes place so that the object and the surrounding, both reach an
equilibrium temperature.
There can be 3 modes of heat transfer
(I) Conduction
(II) Convection
(III) Radiation

Chemistry (Class XI) Model Test Paper-2

The oxides and hydroxides of group 2 elements are less basic than that of
group 1 elements. All the alkali metals are silvery white, soft and light metals.
Because of the large size, these elements have low density which increases
down the group from L i to Cs. However, potassium is lighter than sodium. The
melting and boiling points of the alkali metals are low. All group 1 elements
and many group 2 elements impart characteristic colour to an oxidizing flame.
Therefore, they can be detected by the respective flame tests and can be
determined by flame photometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy. However
these tests are fruitless for the detection of beryllium and magnesium
(a) Why does the first element of each group differs from rest of the elements?

SECTION-C

12. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.
Equilibrium constant, KC is expressed as the concentration of products divided
by reactants, each term raised to the stoichiometric constant. Equilibrium
constant has constant value at a fixed temperature and at this stage all the
macroscopic properties such as concentration, pressure etc. become
constant. For a gaseous reaction equilibrium constant is expressed as KP and
written by replacing concentration terms by partial pressures in KC expression.
The direction of reaction can be predicted by reaction quotient Q C which is
equal to KC at equilibrium.
L e-Chatelier’s Principle states that the change in any factor such as
temperature, pressure, concentration etc will cause the equilibrium to shift in
such a direction so as to reduce or counter act the effect of the change.
(a) Write the expression for the equilibrium constant KC for the following
equilibrium:
3Fe(s) + 4H2O(g)  Fe3 O4 (s) + 4H2 (g) [1]

and pressure to yield maximum amount of AB3. [1]
(d) At equilibrium, the concentration of N2, O2 and NO in a sealed tube at
800 K are N2 = 3.0 × 10–4 M, O2 = 4.2 × 10–4 M and NO = 2.8 × 10–4 M
