Bent Tree Secondary School: Subject: - Semester

This worksheet contains 5 problems related to circular motion. Problem 1 involves calculating the normal force exerted by a road on a car traveling around two curves of the same radius but different speeds. Problem 2 asks the minimum speed required for a rollercoaster to remain upright at the top of a vertical circle. Problem 3 shows that the angle of a conical pendulum is related to the pendulum's speed and length. Problem 4 finds the minimum height needed for a ball to roll through a loop-the-loop track. Problem 5 calculates the tension in a string used to whirl a rock in a circular motion.

WORKSHEET: CIRCULAR MOTION

1. A 2000 kg car travels on a road at a speed of 20 m/s. the radius of the curvature
at two points A and B are both 50 m.

a. Calculate the normal force exerted by the road at point A.

b. Calculate the normal force exerted by the road at point B.
c. Calculate the maximum speed that the car can travel at point B without losing
contact with the road?

2. A rollercoaster ride travels in a vertical circle of radius 15 m as shown. At the top

of the circle, the rollercoaster is upside down. Calculate the minimum speed
required for the rollercoaster to prevent its passengers from falling out.
3. In a conical pendulum, a small mass is revolving in horizontal circle with constant
speed v at the end of the cord of length L, that makes an angle θ with vertical as
shown.

show that θ=tan −1 ( )

4. A ball of mass M is released from rest at a vertical height h above the ground.
The ball then rolls (without friction) down the incline and through a loop-the-loop
of radius R. Find the minimum vertical height h the ball must start with in order to
barely make it through the loop and not leave the track.
5. A 1.5 kg rock on a frictionless surface is whirled around in a flat circle at the end
of an 85 cm string. It has a linear speed of 1.80 m/s. Calculate the tension in the
string?
