Directions: Read and analyze the problems inside the box.

Karla took a survey of her classmates to find out their
favorite food. 21 classmates participated in the survey. 7
answered ice cream, 3 answered spaghetti, 2 answered burger,
5 answered biscuits and 4 answered cake as their favorite food.

Danilo took a survey of his classmates about their favorite
pet. He recorded the data separately. Out of 13 boys, 8 answered
dog and 5 answered cat. On the other hand, out of 11 girls, 7
answered dog and 4 answered cat.

’s New

Ms. Concepcion, a Grade 4 teacher, interviewed her pupils


on their favorite subject. She had interviewed 30 pupils and
recorded all their responses in a tally table and made a bar graph
to show the picture of the data collected. Let’s see the table and
bar graph she made!

Based on the tally sheet that Ms. Concepcion made, what


subject has the highest number of votes? Lowest number of votes?

Let us go back to the situation presented earlier. How did Ms.


Concepcion collect, organize and present her data?

Ms. Concepcion collected and organized her data through a table


form to arrange the data values with their corresponding number
or frequency. Tables are useful to

organize data so we can easily read, understand and collect
information. A table uses column and rows to organize and
arrange data. Ms. Concepcion’s tally table shows 3 columns and 6
rows to organize her data.

After Ms. Concepcion organized the data, she presented it through


a single bar graph to show comparison of the data she collected
and just want to display the value of the item for each category in
the opposing axis. These are the steps that she did in making her
bar graph.

1. First, she decided on the title of the graph. (Favorite Subject)


2. Next, she drew two axes, the horizontal axis or the x
axis and the vertical or the y axis.
3. After that, she decided on the scale and interval to be used
in the graph. (Since her highest response is 12, she used the
scale of 0 – 15 and the interval is by 5s.)
4. Lastly, she labelled the data according to specific type of
data. (She labelled her horizontal axis as Name of Subject
since it tells what she is collecting about and the vertical axis
as Number of Pupils, to tell what is being counted.

First, write the Title of the
Graph

Based on the bar graph presented, Filipino got 12, Math got 8,
Science got 6 and English got 4.
Therefore, Filipino is the most favorite subject of Ms. Concepcion’s
class while English was the least favorite.

Let’s try another example!

Mr. Santos owns two appliance stores. He compares the sales of


the two stores and recorded it. In store A, there were 35
refrigerators, 30 televisions, 45 radios and 10 ovens sold. In store B,
there were 40 refrigerators, 25 televisions, 55 radios and 12 ovens
sold.

Which store has the most number of sales?

To find out the answer, let us look at the situation first. Mr. Santos is
trying to compare these two sets of data which are the sales of
Store A and B. So if we are going to present two sets of data on the
same graph we use a double bar graph.

After organizing the data, let’s use a double bar graph to


present the data. Remember to follow the steps in making a bar

Based on the double bar graph, the item that was most
popular among the customer is the radio which got the highest
number of item sold by both two stores while oven got the least
number of sales from both stores.

Always Remember!

Bar graphs are used to compare or contrast data from


different groups or periods. Bar graphs can be vertical or horizontal.
They have two axes, the horizontal and the vertical axis (Tabilang
et. al. 2015, p. 246). There are two types of bar graph, the single bar
graph and double bar graph.
In making a bar graph, these are the steps to follow:
1. First, decide on the title of the graph.
2. Next, draw two axes, the horizontal axis or the x axis and the
vertical or the y axis.
3. Then, decide on the scale and interval to be used in the
graph.
4. Lastly, label the data according to specific type of data.

1. Baste wanted to know of what is the favorite ice cream flavor of his
classmates. So he conducted a survey to find out. He recorded his
data separately. Of his classmates, 18 are boys and 10 are girls. Out of
18 boys,10 chose chocolate flavor, 6 chose mango and 2 chose
vanilla. On the other hand, out of 10 girls, 5 chose chocolate, 3 chose
mango and 2 chose vanilla.

a. Make a table to organize the data.


b. Present it in a double bar graph.

2. Juan has many hens in his farm. Every day, he collects eggs
from his hens. These are the number of eggs that he collected
from Monday to Friday. On Monday, he collected 30 eggs, 25
eggs on Tuesday, 15 eggs on Wednesday, 10 eggs on
Thursday and 40 eggs on Friday.
