Include Additional Worksheets With Calculations For Partial Credits in The Event Your Final Answer Is Not Correct

This document contains an assignment to design a 7-inch, 6,500-foot casing string for a well. It provides calculations to determine: 1) The burst and collapse pressure requirements according to API standards. 2) That N-80 casing meets both the calculated burst pressure of 44,444 psi and collapse pressure of 33,333 psi requirements. 3) Additional worksheets should be included for partial credit if the final answer is incorrect.

Assignment #6 Casing Design

Name: Ali kamel (#33)

Due date: 2 -April

Include additional worksheets with calculations for partial credits in the event your final answer is not correct.

1) Compute the body-yield strength for 20 in. J-55 casing with a nominal wall thickness of 0.5 in. and a nominal
weight per foot of 106.5 lbf/ft. (2pts)

Use i-Handbook for casing specification.
Your job is to design a 7-in., 6,500-ft casing string for a well where the mud wt. will be 10.5 ppg and
the formation pore pressure is expected to be 0.67 psi/ft. Use only N-80 casing.

5) Identify the casings that fulfill the collapse and burst requirements (1pt)

6) Select the most appropriate casing and explain why. (1pt)

The most appropriate casing is that which weighs (26 Ib/ft) , because it’s less cost and besides, the
calculations for the suitable casing are done to design for the worst cases of the well and the formation
and the selected casing can withstand it and more!

7) Check if the selected casing can satisfy the tensional requirements using API design factors. (1pt)
𝑷𝑷𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑻 = 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 × 𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔 × 𝟏𝟏. 𝟖𝟖 = 𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑 𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷 (𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭𝑭 𝒕𝒕𝒕𝒕𝒕𝒕 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 𝑰𝑰𝑰𝑰/𝒇𝒇𝒇𝒇)
Yes, the selected can satisfy the tensile strength, as its yield strength is (604000 Ibs >304200 Ibs)

8) You have been hired by an oil company and in your first day you were asked review the well design and
specially the casing design. They have selected a 7'' J-55 liner (26 lb/ft) The total depth of the well is 16300 ft
and the PP gradient is 0.536 psi/ft. Do you think that they have made the right selection? Explain your answer
with calculation and give your recommendation. (3pts)
𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷 = 𝟎𝟎. 𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓 × 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 = 𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖. 𝟖𝟖 𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷 & 𝑷𝑷𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃𝒃 = 𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖. 𝟖𝟖 × 𝟏𝟏. 𝟏𝟏 = 𝟗𝟗𝟗𝟗𝟗𝟗𝟗𝟗. 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒 𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷𝑷
So, the casing should withstand (9610.48 psi) pressure without burst failure! But the selected casing will fail
definitely, because the maximum burst that it can handle is (4980 psi)!

9) Why do we run casing? List 4 (1pt)

1) To prevent the wellbore from caving in!

2) To enhance the ability to drill to the total depth!
3) To provide an acceptable well environment for the bottom hole equipment!
4) To confine the production of formation fluids to the well-bore!
5) On-shore to prevent the contamination of fresh water sands!
6) To control the well-bore pressure when drilling!
7) To prevent water migration to producing formations!

10)True / False (1.5pts)

a) J-55 has a higher internal yield pressure than N-80 for all weight per foot grades. False!
b) -80 has a higher minimum yield strength than K-55 for all weight per foot grades. True!
c) There are 3 different types of collapse pressure. False! There are 4.
