Statement of Purpose
In Grade 8, I made the decision to study economics. As a student of ICSE, I could never seem to
relate the concepts I learnt to the real world around me. I took up projects studying corporations
such as Lifestyle, banks such as the State Bank of India, did my own researches but could never seem
to answer the questions ‘Why can’t we just print more money?’, ‘How do economists follow ceteris
paribus?’, ‘How accurate really is inflation?’
After choosing the CIE curriculum, I found that the new theories introduced to us gave room for
more questions, and even answered the ones I already had. The curriculum was designed to create
international thinkers and researchers, the knowledge gathering process was not confined to
textbooks. Classroom activities such as arguments, evaluations, discussions probed my critical
thinking and enabled me to apply economic concepts to the real world. Reality, with its possibilities
and flaws co-existed, each making sense of the other, and I began to see the world through the lens
of economics.
Apart from being a student of economics, I am also a student of business and finance. I actively
participated in ‘Crisis Management’. Here, we were put in hypothetical crises that firms could face –
we were to deal with them and suggest possible solutions. I also took part in various simulations like
‘Bulls and Bears’ - a Stock Market Simulation, and ‘Hubro.com’ – an online business simulation.
These opportunities tested my business knowledge in actuality, and challenged me to think out of
the box. I was inspired and activated by these simulations, and felt empowered to make decisions in
almost real-world scenarios.
Currently, I am a learner who is devouring everything in this field. I aim to be an economist and/or
practise in the corporate field of finance. I believe that Shiv Nadar University’s learned faculty,
diverse student population and stellar facilities will help me achieve my goals and enter into
international realms of opportunity.
As a member of our society, I would like to leverage my knowledge and skills from this course to
fulfil my responsibility as a global citizen. My dream is to develop a course to improve the rate of
financial literacy. With the right kind of education, I believe I can elicit this important change and
allow many individuals to free themselves from the shackles of financial difficulties. I hope to reach
out to women in vulnerable regions and the youth especially, so that they can be financially
independent, and can make informed, empowered financial decisions.
To achieve this vision, I know I have to further delve into the fields of micro and macroeconomics, as
well as finance. To translate my dreams into reality, the institution I study in is of great
importance. Having analysed my options, I believe Shiv Nadar University is the perfect fit for me. I
am confident it will provide me with a rock-solid foundation of knowledge which will help me
improve the economic prospects of our country. It will also give me the expertise to be the best in
my field and make a difference on the world arena.
In order to discover new passions and skills, I have always taken up activities to discover myself and
become a more holistic individual.
In order to enrich my hobbies, I professionally took up Carnatic music and Bharatnatyam and have
performed in music concerts, as well as dance programmes. Additionally, I consider myself to be an
enthusiastic cook and baker – and have a certificate from the Lavonne Academy of Baking Science
and Pastry Arts.
I also enjoy discovering new and upcoming fields and that is why I enrolled for Google’s digital
marketing course. This course gave me great insights into the world of business – in terms of time
management, the dynamic business environment, negotiation amongst others.
I thoroughly enjoy taking up leadership roles, and believe that every event is a different type of
learning experience. While I was in Grade 11, I assisted my seniors in successfully hosting a TEDx
Youth event at our school – Vidyashilp Academy. The following year, I was promoted to being the
Event Manager. While adapting to the pandemic, we hosted the event virtually. I have also been a
part of the organising committee for a marathon held in our school. I enrolled myself in a
programme conducted in our school – VidyashilpxDesi, in collaboration with ‘Desi’ – a magazine run
by the youth. Here, I mentored my juniors and helped them strengthen their thinking and creative
writing skills. During the student body election in Grade 9, I led our party to win the first place by
more than two hundred votes. We then went on to form the student council. In Grade 10 – I was a
part of the Yearbook Editorial Committee. I was also chosen to be the leader of this committee in
Grade 12. Taking up these leadership roles has allowed me to not only teach and guide my peers,
but also learn many other skills such as team-work, decision-making, compromise, and collaboration.
An integral part of being the youth is using our voices for the greater good so that we can be
instruments of change. I therefore actively take part in debates. I have represented my school in
many competitions – Model United Nations, Model Parliaments, Verbattle, and have brought back
accolades for the school. I also participated in Verbattle at the national, regional and state levels. At
the school level too, I have participated in many debates and won several certificates. Additionally, I
have been invited to judge some ‘Shilp Encounter’ – debate competitions held in my school. These
competitions always encourage me to look at issues from more than one perspective, and to be a
listener.
As a team-player, I have taken part in a few sports - representing my school to play badminton, and
also winning laurels for several track and field events at the school level. I also attended the Sports
Summer Camps for many years at XLR8 – a sports club.
As a member of society, I strongly feel the need to give back to society and therefore crowd-funded
a drive to provide cataract surgeries for elderly people in association with Fuel A Dream.
Other Academic Achievements: Tell us about your achievements in other academic activities like
Math Olympiad, Science Competition etc. at International, National, Regional and State level.
As somebody who was always excited to go beyond my knowledge and challenge, I always enjoyed
taking part in Olympiads. I have participated in the National Finance Olympiad, National Commerce
Olympiad and Spelling Bee competitions throughout the years. I have also placed second in the
actively partaken in Mathematics Olympiads. Additionally, I represented my school in the Times NIE
Quizomania.
I have consistently topped many exams throughout the years in varied subjects – English,
Mathematics, Economics, Business, History, among others.
I also partook and won first place in a science debate – ‘Scientia’ held in school.
