CHAPTER 1
LAYOUT AND CONTENT LAYOUT

Objectives
a. To learn about the use of layout in Focusky.
b. To learn about the use of content layout in Focusky.
c. To create a quick presentation with layout and content layout.

1.1 Layout

Insert Layout

Layout is frames and shapes that are prearranged into a certain pattern and path for easy
use. Once inserted, all you need to do is to insert text, image etc. into the preset path. To insert
layout, use the Layout panel at the side.

To insert a layout, first select a layout of your preference. Click on it and it will be inserted into
the canvas. Frames and shapes are automatically arranged into a preset path and can be
viewed through the Thumbnails panel. You can also click on each thumbnail to go to a
particular path.

Edit Layout
You can edit the selected layout if you wish to. Simply select the frame or shape you want to
edit and edit it like how you would to a frame or shape.

You can move the frame or shape around to rearrange the whole layout. If you wish to, you
can add new frame or shape as a new path into the layout too. For frames or shapes that are
not needed, you can delete them.

Delete Layout
To delete a layout, simply select all the frames and shapes in the layout and use the Delete
Object button or press the Delete key.

For those who wish to create a presentation quickly, layout is a helpful feature for you to make
a presentation quickly and easily.

Exercise:
Throughout this manual, we will be creating a presentation based on the title “Welcome to
Sabah – The Land Below The Wind”. Therefore:
1. Create a new empty project. Insert a background if you want to.
2. Insert a layout. You can choose any layout you prefer as it can still be edited later on.

3. In the layout, create a title “Welcome to Sabah – The Land Below The Wind” at an
appropriate path (usually the first or second path). You can make changes to the layout,
frame or shape if needed.

1.2 Content Layout

Insert Content Layout


Content layout is similar to layout. They are prearranged elements (images, text etc.) grouped
together for quick and easy presentation making. All you need to do is to edit parts to suit it to
your use. To insert content layout, use the Content Layout panel at the side or from the Insert
drop down menu.

Clicking Content Layout at the Insert drop down menu will open the Content Layout panel at
the side. To insert a content layout, simply click on a content layout of your choice or drag it
onto the canvas.

Edit Content Layout


Elements are grouped together in the content layout. To edit them, you can ungroup them
beforehand. To ungroup, select the content layout and click the Ungroup button at the side.

Once they are ungroup, you can edit the elements accordingly. You can replace the image
with your own image or format the text. If there is any element that is not needed, you can
delete them. Once you are done, you can choose to group them together again.

To delete a content layout, simply select it and press the Delete key or use the Delete Object
button. If you have ungrouped the elements, you have to then make sure you have selected
all of them by using Shift + click before deleting them.

Exercise:
By using content layout, create the following:
1. Content about the location of Sabah at an appropriate path. Make use of image, text,
video or other elements. You can make changes to the path’s frame or content layout if
needed.

CHAPTER 2
SMART ART AND CHART

Objectives
a. To learn about the use of Smart Art in Focusky.
b. To learn about the use of chart in Focusky.
c. To use Smart Art and chart to display information and data.

2.1 Smart Art

Smart Art is the graphical presentation of information. It simplifies and summarizes information
while presenting it in graphic so that it is easier for the target audience to understand. In
Focusky, Smart Art is prearranged shapes and text that can be inserted quickly for this purpose.
There are a few types of Smart Art: List, Process, Cycle, Hierarchy, Relationship, Matrix and
Pyramid. Each of them can be used to present a different kind of information.

List
To show list or non-sequential information

Process
To show sequences in a process or timeline

Cycle
To show sequences in a process or timeline
in circular form

Hierarchy
To show information in a hierarchy form
such as organization chart, tournament
chart etc.

Relationship
To show the relationship between matters or
points

Matrix
To show how parts are in relation to a whole

Pyramid
To show information in a pyramid form
where components are in different sizes in
relation to their amount/portion

Insert Smart Art


To insert Smart Art, use the Smart Art panel at the side or from the Insert drop down menu.

Clicking Smart Art at the Insert drop down menu will open the Smart Art panel at the side. To
insert, simply click the Smart Art of your choice or drag it onto the canvas.

Edit Smart Art


Elements are grouped together in the Smart Art. To edit them, you can ungroup them

with another shape or edit and format the text. If there is any element that is not needed, you

Exercise:

1. Content about reasons to visit Sabah by using an appropriate Smart Art. Edit and format it
accordingly. You are encouraged to add in more elements such as image or use more
than one path.

2.2 Chart

Chart is the graphic presentation of data. It simplifies and makes data easier to be understood
by the target audience. There are a few types of chart available in Focusky. Each of them can
be used to present a different kind of data.

Bar Chart
It is used to show distinct and numerical
comparisons across categories.

Dot Chart
It is a type of statistical chart that uses filled
circle to plot data points on a simple scale.

Pie Chart
It is used to show percentages or
proportions of categories by dividing a
circle into segments.

Polygonal Line Chart


It is used to show values over a period of
time. It is commonly used to display a trend
of how data changes over time.

Area Chart
It is basically a line chart but with the area
under the line filled with colour to show
area.

Stacking Chart
It is similar to a bar chart but with the data
series stacked on top of each other in order.

Radar Chart
It is used to compare multiple quantitative
variables. It is useful for displaying
performance by showing the high and low
scores among different performance’s
variables.

Mixed Chart
In mixed chart, you can choose to display
different data series in different chart types.

Nightingale Rose Chart


It is drawn on a polar coordinate grid. It
divides each category into equal segments
and uses the area size in each segment as
the representation of value.

Table
Table is a useful form to show data in the
form of a column and row for better
understanding and analysis.

Insert Chart
To insert chart, use the Chart panel on the side or from the Insert drop down menu.

Clicking Chart at the Insert drop down menu will open the Chart panel at the side. To insert,
simply click on a chart and draw it on the canvas or drag it onto the canvas.

Edit Chart
Inserted chart comes together with default data. To use your own data, you will need to edit
it. Select the chart and click on Edit Data under Chart at the side Edit panel. For the following
part, we will use Bar Chart as the example.

Chart Data will open for you to edit the default data.

To change the default data, replace the data in the table with your own. (Note: chart’s legend
and axis label depend on the value in the table’s header.)

The double arrow icon on the top left corner allows you to select the whole table and also to
switch the row and column. To add in a new row or column, simply type your data in a new
row or column or you can use the Add a row and Add a column button at the bottom.

You can also right click at a row, column or cell to activate the options menu. You can add a
new column and row; and clear or delete blocks (a data series) from the menu. (Note: clearing
blocks or deleting values from cell will not delete the block. The block will maintain with 0 as
the data value. To actually delete it, please use delete blocks.)

At the Variables panel, you can change the colour of your variables (colour of bar on the
chart).

At the Categories panel, you can choose to show or hide categories data on the chart by
ticking or unticking the checkbox.

You can import data in csv format by clicking the Read from a *csv file button. Axis type and
colour can be changed too. You can also choose a different legend position in Legend
direction.

For the rest of the setting, please refer to the following:


 Make line smooth: line on the chart will be smooth (curve) instead of straight
 Allow Data Showing: chart will be labelled with data value
 Allow animation: chart will have entrance animation at presentation mode

For Mixed Chart, you will have an additional option in the Variables panel that allow you to
choose a chart type for each variable data.

To change your chart type, simply click on any chart type under Chart on the side Edit panel
and the chart type will change. You can also format the font of your chart label under Font.

To insert at the title for the chart, simply use a text box and arrange accordingly.

Delete Chart
To delete a chart, simply select it and press the Delete key or use the Delete Object button.

Exercise:
By using a chart, create the following:
1. A titled chart that displays Sabah tourism statistics. Choose an appropriate chart type.

CHAPTER 3
LINK, SYMBOL, ROLES AND SWF

Objectives
a. To learn about the use of link and symbol in Focusky.
b. To learn about the use of roles and SWF in Focusky.
c. To use link, symbol, roles and SWF to create an interesting presentation.

3.1 Link

Insert Link
Link is a useful tool for you to link external resources into your presentation. You can use it for
linking path too. To insert a link, use the Link panel at the side or from the Insert drop down
menu.

Click Link on the Insert drop down menu or Add a Link at the Link panel, then draw an area on
the canvas as the link clicking area. The bigger the area you draw, the bigger the link clicking
area is.

Edit Link
You can link to different resources. The option can be found under Advanced at the Link panel.

Link to webpage allows you to link to any webpage. Double clicking on the link will open up
the webpage on a browser. You have to insert an URL of the webpage. You can also choose
to display link hint with text such as “Please click to go to webpage”.

Link to path will link you to another path. Double clicking on the link will bring you to the linked
path. Click on Select frame (path) and select a path you want to link to at the option window
opened. You can also click on Go To The Path to go to the linked path directly. Set a transition
time at Transition settings for a faster or slower transition between paths.

Link to file allows you to link external file such as documents, images etc. Double clicking on
the link will open up the external file. To link, click on the Browser button, then locate and
choose the file you want.

You will be prompted with, “Do you need to copy the file to the project?”. Choosing Yes would
embed the external file in the Focusky project file. Once embedded, deletion or moving of
the original file would not affect the link created.

Folder Link allows you to link to an external folder. To link, click on the Select Folder button, then
locate and choose the folder you want.

The link clicking area is transparent in presentation mode. Therefore, to recognize the clicking
area, you can look for the clicking icon or the link hint.

Delete Link
To delete a link, simply select it and press the Delete key or use the Delete Object button.

Exercise:
By using the link, create the following:
1. Insert a text titled “Sabah Tourism”. Create a link area and link them to a webpage, video,
image etc. about Sabah Tourism.

3.2 Symbol

Insert Symbol
The symbol is reusable vector graphic available in Focusky. You can use symbols as a quick
way to vary your presentation. It can be used as a graphic pattern as well. To insert symbol,
use the Symbol panel at the side or from the Insert drop down menu.

Clicking Symbol at the Insert drop down menu will open the Symbol panel at the side. To insert,
simply click on a symbol or drag it onto the canvas.

Edit Symbol
You can add shadow to symbol under Shadow at the side Edit panel. You can change the
symbol colour at the Fill color under Advanced at the side Edit panel.

To transform the symbol into pattern makes use of the Reproducer option. You can choose
between Matrix or Circular-reproducer.

Delete Symbol

1. Insert a symbol and link it to the first path (like a home button). Add it to every path.

3.3 Roles

Insert Roles
Roles are animated characters available in Focusky. It can make your presentation more
interesting with more variety. To insert roles, use the Roles panel at the side or from the Insert
drop down menu.

Clicking Roles at the Insert drop down menu will open the Roles panel at the side. You can
choose between Flash Actor, PNG Actor and GIF Actor. A list of available roles will show.
Clicking on a character will show you more variation of the character. To insert, simply click on
a variation or drag it onto the canvas. (Note: PNG Actor’s characters are not animated.)

Edit Roles
You can change the opacity of a character at Opacity under Advanced at the side Edit panel.
You can also use Reproducer to make duplication of your character.

Delete Roles
To delete a role, simply select it and press the Delete key or use the Delete Object button.

Exercise:
Add roles into your path accordingly. Make sure it matches your topic and fit into the subject
matter.

3.4 SWF

Insert SWF
SWF is very similar with roles. They are animated images that will add variety to your
presentation. To insert SWF, use the SWF panel at the side.

Edit SWF
You can change the opacity of a SWF at Opacity under Advanced at the side Edit panel. You
can also use Reproducer to make duplication of your SWF. It is similar to the roles.

To delete a SWF, simply select it and press the Delete key or use the Delete Object button.

Exercise:
Add SWF into your path accordingly. Make sure it matches your topic and fit into the subject
matter.

CHAPTER 4
SLIDE SHOW AND MUSIC

Objectives
a. To learn about the use of the slide show in Focusky.
b. To learn about the use of music in Focusky.
c. To use a slide show and music to enhance your presentation.

4.1 Slide Show

Insert Slide Show


Slide Show in Focusky allows you to create a simple photo slide show. You can use this for quick
insert and arrangement of multiple photos. To insert Slide Show, use the slide show panel at the
side.

To insert, simply click on the Add local image button, then choose and locate the photos you
want to insert.

Edit Slide Show


You can resize or rotate the slide show accordingly. You can edit slide show with the options
available at the side Edit panel. Under Type, you can choose the type of slide show transition
style. To preview, click on the Preview button.

Under Options, you can do the following:

 Picture duration: how long a photo stays on the screen


 Border size: the size of slide show border
 Border colour: the colour of slide show border
 Stretch modes: choose between proportional stretch or stretch by force. Stretch by force
will alter the photo dimension to suit the slide show frame
 Loop playing: tick the checkbox to make the slide show loop

To add, delete or clear photos, you can do that under Image List. You can reorder the position
of photo by dragging them to a higher or lower position.

You can also change how the slide show play and stop – automatically or on mouse click
under Advanced. Choose Click to play and stop on mouse click. Choose Enter frame (path)
and Leave frame (path) to play and stop automatically.

Delete Slide Show


To delete a slide show, simply select it and press the Delete key or use the Delete Object button.

Exercise:
By using slide show, create slide show with various photos about Sabah. Choose at least 10
photos and change your settings accordingly. Include a title “Photo Gallery” as well.

4.2 Music

Insert Music
Music is an optional element in presentation. Depending on the situation, music can enhance
your presentation. For example, if you are presenting a photo montage of an event, you can
use music in the background to make it more interesting. To insert music, use the Music panel
at the side or from the Insert drop down menu.

Clicking Music at the Insert drop down menu will prompt the dialog box where you can locate
and choose your music file. (Note: only mp3 file format is supported.) You can do the same
thing by clicking the Add music button at the side Edit panel. You can also add a recording
by clicking the Add Recording button. The recording window would open for you to start
recording.

Clicking the BGM Settings button will open up the options window. Scroll to the Background
Music section to edit your music settings.

Edit Music
You can make edit and insert the music at the side Edit panel. You can preview the music by
clicking the play or stop button at Action. You can change when the music play and stop –
automatically or on mouse click under Advanced. Choose Click to play and stop on mouse
click. Choose Enter frame (path) and Leave frame (path) to play and stop automatically.
There are other settings such as fade in and out effect too.

The music icon is not hidden during presentation mode. So make sure it is placed and resized
properly for your presentation need.

CHAPTER 5
OTHER AVAILABLE FEATURES AND TOOLS

Objectives
a. To learn about other available features and tools in Focusky.
b. To learn to use them to enhance your presentation.

5.1 Layer

Layer is a convenient tool that makes it easier for you to find objects you have inserted into
Focusky project file. To open layer, use the Layer panel at the side.

At the Layer panel, you can see all the objects available in that current path. If you wish to see
all objects in all paths, uncheck Only display all objects in current path. You can hide all the
objects presented by checking Hide all layers.

Clicking on the thumbnails of an object will bring you to the object on the canvas. Clicking the
eye icon will show/hide the object.

5.2 My Library

My library is another convenient tool in Focusky that allows you to manage your project easily.
You can import image, video etc into my library. This makes for easy insert and reuse of an
object. You can also delete an object from my library when it is not needed anymore.

5.3 Formula

Insert Formula
In Focusky, you can insert formula through the Insert drop down menu.

Formula Editor will open up, featuring all the common special characters used in a formula. To
insert a formula, simply click on the character needed, choose an appropriate variation and

5.4 Mind Map

Insert Mind Map


Focusky provides an easy way to create mind map. To insert mind map, select Mind Map from
the Insert drop down menu.

Mind Map Subject Library will open up. Choose the object you want and it will be inserted into
the canvas.

It is not added to path by default. To add it to a path, select the object (do not click on the
object directly but the blank space beside it) and click on the Add to Path button.

Click on the object to activate the AddNode (Insert) button and Add line button. AddNode
allows you to add a new branch (topics) while Add line allows you to add a new line.

Edit Mind Map


As new line added has no branch, you can choose to either further adding line or branch. You
can continue to add line and branch to suit your need. At the original object in the centre
and any branch added, you can double click to add or edit text.

You can change the line type under Line type. Select the mind map (click at the blank space
beside it to select mind map as a whole object) and the option will show at the side Edit panel.

You can choose to arrange the branches automatically or manually by checking or


unchecking Automatic Arrangement under Mind Map. You can unfold (expand) or fold
(collapse) branches too.

You can choose to output mind map in picture format under Output as a picture. Simply tick
the checkbox “Do you want to output JPG picture” and click the Publish button after key in
the picture dimension (width and height) you want.

For the branch, you can select it and choose a style under Style for it (click Apply to all
branches to have the same style for all branches). To change the original object to other
shape, select it and choose a new shape under Mind Map Subject Library.

For branches, select any of the branch first and choose a new shape under More shapes. You
can click Apply to all branches to change the shape of all branches.

Under Appearance Setting, you can change the appearance of the branches.

Delete Mind Map


To delete mind map, simply select it as a whole and press the Delete key or use the Delete
Object button. To delete a line or branch only, select the line or branch and press the Delete
key.
